Unc'e Sam Murray has juat discovered that he has been in a trance for the past 50 or 75 years and during all that time he never discov ered what he w as good for. The other day he dropped a soda crack er on his foot, smashed his toe, awoke with a start and—made the greatest discovery of the age, to-wit: He had discovered that he w as intended for a grocer and he has struck his calling and is An independent local newspaper devoted to the interests o f Central Point and the Hogue River Valley. Published Every Thursday. Subscription price, $1.50 per year, in advance. Entered as Second-class Matter, May 4, j 1J06. at the Post Office at Central Point, Oregon, under the Act o f Congress of March 3, 1879. IHE CRATER LAKE PROJECT. The bill which has been intro duced in the legislature asking for an appropriation for the Cra ter Lake wagon road is one that should have the hearty support o f all of Southern Oregon. There is but one crater lake in the world and all who have visited that scenic spot agree that it is one of the greatest natural wonders of the world. It has already proven a great at traction to tourists who come to the Coast, and last season many thousand people visited the lake in spite of the physical discom forts and heavy expense that is incident to the trip on account of the primitive roads and lack of proper accommodations for trav elers. The past travel to the lake, however, will be hut a drop in the bucket as compared with the future travei if the spot is once made accessible to the hun dreds o f thousands of people who pass through this valley every Summer bent on sightseeing and a pleasant outing. Jackson County could have no better business asset than a first- class automobile roaf to Crater Lake, and it is proper that the state should assist generously in the work o f construction, because what helps one section of Oregon help the entire state. The people of Jackson Count.\ should see to it that a strong delegation is kept at Salem to look after this bill and to urge the legislature to pass it to a law. IISIIING IN THE R O G U E. R< )gue River fishing is one of the great attractions o f this sec tion of the state. Anglers ol national reputation have traveled across the continent to enjoy the fine trout and steelhead fly fish ing in that stream and which they all declare to be among the very finest in the United States. Because of lack o f legal pro tection to the fish in Rogue River they are about to be extermi nated, and if such a calamity should occur, the Rogue River valley will lose one o f its best attractions. A bill has been presented to the legislature proposing to limit net and trap fishing on lower Rogue River to a short season and prohibiting all fishing on the upper Rogue reaches to the rod and line. All Southern Orego nians should give this bill their hearty support, for it means much to this section o f the state to have it become a law and to have the game fish o f the river protected and propagated. The hill of Senator Bingham providing for the amendment of the tax law and providing for the publication o f the delinquent tax list as formerly is one that should become a law. It is one in which every taxpayer is vitally inter ested. because in case o f his prop erty becoming delinquent from any cause he hai no means of learning that fact until after finding that the property has been sold. There is a general demand among the people for the passage of this amendment and if the people will write a line to thtir senator and representatives asking them to support the meas-1 urc it will do doubt become a law.
