W illiam Bybee, one of the best-known men in th is p art of Oregon for more th an 50 years, passed aw ay Wednesday mrfming of last w e e k a t his home near Jacksonville, aged 78 years and 5 m onths, the imm ediate cause of death being stom ach trouble and a complica tion o f diseases. W illiam Bybee was born in Clark County, K entucky, in 1830, and came to Oregon in 1852 and to Jacksonville in 1854, w here he took up a land claim, j on which he resided a t the tim e of his j death. In 1864 he became associated w ith Je sse W alker and in the sam e year m arried his daughter, Miss Elizabeth W alker, who died in 1809. They had by this union eleven children, five of whom are now living, as follows: Mrs. Chas. Brim, of Jacksonville; Mrs. F red Luy, of Medford; William Bybee, of Alaska; Frank Bybee, of Jacksonville; Robert Bybee, o f Idaho. In 1878 Mr. I’ybee was elected ns sheriff of Jackson County and served for tw o term s In the early days both he and Mr. W alker took an active p art in protecting the se ttle rs against the ■ Indians. Mr. Bybee was for many years one of the heaviest propertj' owners in the county, and was known as a friend to the poor and needy, m any 3uch having been assisted over the rough places while g e ttin g a start, in life by his lib erality He was a m em berof the Inde pendent Order of Odd Fellows and m em bers of th a t order from Jackson ville, Central Point and Gold Hill a t tended the funcrul in a body, the burial service of the order being read a t the g rave by Judge Silas J. Day and Jam es Wilson, pioneer m em bers of the Ja c k sonville lodge Services a t the home w< re conducted by Rev. D uring the hot w eather of Septem ber the birds which have usually moved to r the gulf regions w ith the first chill wind from the north wero on their travels, Just ns though they had a fixed schedule. No doubt the birds can tell the seasons by the sun If they care to. If the w eather nnd the food supply cau account for the Septem ber flight of tbe birds it Is singular th at the re su lt Is not uniform . It Is said that birds which live on Insects must go south lu winter, because Insect life Is killed In Uie north by frost. B ut there Is in- ect life in the south all the year round, yet the birds m igrate north In spring on schedule time, oveu though the northern w inter lingers “in tho lap of spring." Some birds Hint live on seeds w inter In the north aud fare ss they enu. O ther seed ra tin g birds go south apparently because the habit runs In the blood. The whole subject Is Involved In m ystery for man, hut evidently the m ystery lies deeper than the mere haste or delay of w eather changes nothamble to man.
