PREPARE FO R T H E G R A N D
Portland, Ore., November 9, 1908.
(Special Correspon denee.)
Eugene surprised the people o f this
entire country last year by raising a
great advertising fund and paying a
■alary of $5,000 annually for an expert.
Up to Saturday, Oct. 31st, there had
been subscribed for the coming year
$l i,6Sl, to which will be added $1400, (
the total being more than a dollar and
a half for every man, woman and child
in the city, and this will be used in
advertising the resources and advan
tages o f Eugene and Lane County.
Eugene is determined to go ahead and
doesn’t mind a little thing like a nation
al election. What other town of 10,000*
people in Oregon, Washington or Cali
fornia can match this record?

Salem will have the convention of the
Oregon State Fair Dairy Association
December 10th and 11th and already
preparations are being made for a
gathering that will surpass all previous
meetings. The Oregon Development
League will continue to work with the
Association, and uses the dairy report
as one o f the most effective pieces of
literature in corresponding with Eastern
farmers.
Albany is not allowing the people of
Portland or the other valley cities and
towns to forget the Albany Apple Fair
and the dedication o f the new Southern
Pabific depot on Tuesday, November
10th. Portland will be there with a
thoroughly representative delegation.
Two o f the greatest displays of ap
ples ever made in the Praific North
west are attractions for early in Decem
ber. One will commence at Portland
December 1st and continue for three
