(Special Correspondence ) “ Good Roads” seems so have become j in recent months the subject o f almost every conversation when a group of citizens get together. During the last two weeks there has been more dis cussion o f good roads among members o f the Portland Commercial Club than there has about the great political campaign that is before us. When dairymen get together they discuss good roads; it is the same iwith fruit growers, while automobile ownere have become veritable cranks on the subject. An insistent demand, coming from every section o f the state, has been made upon the Portland Commercial Club to call some character o f repre sentative meeting to discuss a practical plan whereby all Oregsn may have better highways. President W. K. Newell o f the State Board o f Horti culture has written to the Club asking that action be taken without delay. A similar request also comes from Hon. J. W. Bailey, State Dairy and hood Commissioner, on behalf o f the dairy interests, and the bankers o f Portland and other cities and towns o f the state are o f one mind on the subject. Many o f the cities throughout Oregon are building high class hard surface pave ments, and everywhere you go you find men talking “ Good Roads.” As a result o f all this it has been determined to hold an “ Oregon Good Roads Conference” in the convention hall (6th floor) of the Portland Com mercial Club Tuesday, August 11, with morning, afternoon and evening sessions. No interest in the state seems to be more anxious to have a part in develop ing the good roads sentiment into a realization than the railroads, and as a result a rate o f a fare and a third has been made for this meeting; tickets will be gqod the day before and the day after the meeting, so that it may be extended over the second day if neces sary. An interesting program will be pre pared, but there will be no long-winded theoretical speeches. Practical men will be secured and practical questions discussed. The Good Roads Associa tions o f Oregon and Washington will be asked to co-operato in making the meeting a succees. The basis o f repre sentation will be announced within a few days, but all commercial and in dustrial bodies, county judges, county commissioners, editors and mayors will be authorized to appoint delegates and urge l|to have a good representa tion present. Hon. James R. Garfield, Secretary of the Interior, and Hon. F. H. Newell, Chief o f the United States Reclama tion Service, spent Thursday in Port- land. Oregon communities as represented through their commercial bodies and other agencies for advertising should commence at once to take advantage of the one-way colonist rates which will be in effect from September 1st to October 31st. No state in the Union has received greater benefit through these colonist rates than Oregon and at aJar-r-r*r !“ July Clearance Sale. Hon John Sharpe Williams, recently ; elected United States Senator from j Mississippi, and prominent nationally as the leader of the Democracy, while here to fill an engagement with the Chautauqua Association was tendered a reception at the Portland Commercial Club Friday night. W ILLIAM JENNINGS BRYAN Grants Pass and Central Point cross < ed bacs on the locul diamond last Sun- | day and until the last o f the, seventh | inning it looked very much as though the Point was about to come into its own and that the Pass-engers were about to get properly skunned. Murray for the home team pitched a winning game until the eighth when he hurt himself sliding to third and after that he flattened out to such an extent that the Pass picked up their courage and won the game. Coupled with the hurt to the Point’ s pitcher was the fact that in the last two innings the Pass simply 1 had a run o f luck that nothing on earth could beat. Jarvis, an old-time bunch- grass player, pitched for the Pass and his delivery improved as the age of the game grew. Central Point got out o f , the rut in the first and made a score o f j two to nothing for a starter and for, the space of an hour they kept things at fever heat but when the tide turned and their luck left them it was all off.
