CENTRAL POINT HERALD, THURSDAY. APRIL 30. Unquiet China. According to observers on the ground In China, there is a mischievous spirit o f rebellion at work, and the so called *'awakening" of the natives gives the malcontents an opportunity for poison ing men’» minds toward what Is good in foreign assistance and in the ruling dynasty. The Celestial Empire, print ed in English at Shanghai, says that with all the spirit of progress mani fested there is also a spirit of narrow ness and revolt which threatens to Im peril the soundness and permanence of the renaissance. Of the present op position of the natives to foreigners this Journal says: T h eir new found strength Is running w ith m uch fo rce In the opposition to all fo reig n aid In the developm ent o f rail w ays. m ines o r oth er natural resou rce» in Chinee. It hi not necessary to assure ou r readers that a great deal o f this v ig o r Is m isdirected. It m ust necessarily be so. T o men so utterly Ignorant o f the p ra ctica l w ork in g o f railw ays and other engineering w ork s as all but one in a m illion o f Chinese are It could not be otherw ise than ridiculous for them to presum e to have any opinion at all. Yet the opinion Is there strong and deter m in edly ex p re ss e d T h e papers are full o f the necessity o f p reventin g foreign cap ital from entering the cou n try at all. and i f the officials attem pt, as the m ore en lightened1 do, to show that help Is desira ble they are abused and cartooned a » allies o f the "fo re ig n d ev il," If not as tra itors to their cou ntry. A writer iu the Chinese Recorder, •nothcr Shanghai paper, eaye that not only Is there at work "a quiet and per- •tetent antlforeign propaganda," but a public sentiment which is strongly "antidynastic." In other words, Chtr nese patriotism today stands for revolt against things as they are, and the empire is actually threatened with de central teat ion and anarchy. To quote from the Recorder article: New Lumber Yard O U R ICE CREAM ! Have you tasted it? Did you use it last Summer? M ore Where the Last Came From. It Is generally conceded that our prosperity came from the ground, where nature’s bounteous hand placed the seeds If not the ripened product It Is gratifying to bo told that there Is more In the same treasure bouse to be dug out In the same way. Not only Is there more of the same sort, but so much more that our prosperity record ean be beaten and perhaps doubled. From the perspective of barren years H might be said that our enjoyment of plenty was riotous. Perhaps tt was. The lesson of It Is worth heeding, but caution should not go to the extent of d'strustlng nature. Ex|>erts say that tvtwt we have been taking from the ground Is but half what we might tako with proper attention to the science of producing. They declare that our seeds and fertilizers are not right, our meth ods of tillage Imperfect, our live stock very Imperfect and our losses by lire and hood and the ravages of insect life double or treble what they need be. In other words, for every million of dollars gained there might be two mil lions gained If we would but make the most of our resources and our labor. Making money enough to be happy on for a day Is perhaps not the highest good. But making money enough to establish a reserve which would tide over lean years so that all years might look alike would constitute a complete task, the complement of natnre'B thor oughness. 1908. will be in his Central Point office on the following dates: $ 1 0 ,0 0 0 .0 0 School Bonds Distrct From Monday morning.
