In the darkness ahead there were occa sional flares of red flame«, and from them ascended iong, comet-like tracks of light th a t flashed into momentary blaze». The boom of the cannon, the wierd shrieking of the shells and their sharp explosion blended in one wild devil’s concert. The boy from Maine drew back quickly from the muzzle of the starboard gun No. 1 of the U nited S tates gunboat M ackinaw. Tbe old gunner standing rigid drew the lanyard tow ard himself with a sudden Jerk. There was a deafening ro ar and a cloud of choking smoke enveloped the gun crew. A nother shell had been sent into the solid earthw orks of F ort Fisher. The boy from Maine rushed forw ard through the smoke and th ru st the clean ing rod into the muzzle of the gun. An other of tbe crew dashed a pailfull of w ater over the long steel tube. Tbe gun was reloaded and another shell was h u rl ed at the sp urts of flame ahead. They had been doing this a t intervals since the early afternoon, and now It was almost m idnight—m idnight of C hristm as eve, 1864. “Cease firing.” came a hoarse order out of the dark. The gun crew of No. I flung themselves down on the sloppy deck w ith audible sighs of relief. The devil’s concert did not abate noticeably. The rem aining vessels of the Federal fleet were still exchanging com plim ents with F o rt Fisher. The old gunner quickly filled his pipe, and the glow from the bowl half illum in ed his wrinkled face now and then. “ I’u t’s me in mind of a C hristm as eve I spent at the mine» in C aliforny,” he remarked, “only it’s ju st a mite worse.” “ Don’t talk about C hristm as,” said one of the crew in a husky voice. “ I left three children at home. They are in bed now and three little stocking« are hanging above the fireplace same as always, I hope. The wife is sitting up a while m ay be, a thinking of me or maybe saying a bit of a prayer. Tton’t like to think of it when things are so dubious. W hat are you thinking about, F ritz ? ” “Of the V aterland—wune,” replied an unm istakable accent. “ Vat is the m atter m it the boy? He is alw ays talking be fore.” The boy heard nothing. lie spraw led on the deck w ith his head on one arm . The smell of the pine trees and the odor of boiling maple sap was in his nostrils. He was many hundreds of miles away from the M ackinaw, off F ort F isher, back in the Maine woods with a augaring party. The smoke of the pine-knot fire was ris ing slowly and the golden brown syrup hissed and bubbled in the kettles. Merry little shrieks of laughter rang in his ears. She was there, the pink and white of her face so prettily emphasized by the mink tippet. How absurdly small those little red m ittens seemed in com parison with h is! How blue her eyes w ere! There was no one looking—ju st one kiss on those lips created solely for the purpose— “ Starboard b atteries commence firing!" came the hoarse and relentless order from the darkness. A none too gentle kick brought the boy back to the M ackinaw, but her face looked a t him for an in stan t out of th< gloom. S tarboard gun No. 1 again adde^ its voice to the devil’s chorus. The sky began to turn from black tr gray. “ A C hristm as present,” said th| gunner grimly as he jerked the lanyard. ' X ' There are two classes of remedies: those of known qual ity and which an» permanently beneficial in effect, utting gently, in harmony w ith nature, when nature needs assist ance; and another class, composed of preparations of unknown, uncertain and inferior character, acting tempo ra rily, but injuriously, as a result of forcing the natural functions unnecessarily. One of the most exceptional of the remediesof known quality andexcellent e is the ever pleasant Syrup of Figs, manufactured by the California Fig Syrup Co., which represents the active principles of plants, known to act most beneficially, in a pleasant syrup, in which the wholesome Californian blue figs are used to con tribute their rich, yet delicate, fruity flavor, it is the remedy of all remedies to sweeten and refresh and cleanse the system gently and naturally, and to assist one in overcoming consti pation and the many ills resulting therefrom. Its active princi ples an^ and '4u quality and I the ,,,ly are known to physicians generally, ami thewfort wet with thelf tppro\ .ii, us u < ii a-. vc ith the favor of many millions of well informed persons who kn now of their own personal knowledge and from actual experiei experience that it is a most excellent laxative remedy We donnt claim that it w ill cure all manner of ills, but recommend it for w hat it really represents, a laxative remedy of known quality and excellence, containing nothing of an objectionable or injurious character. 1 here are two classes of purchasers: those who are informed as to the quality of what they buy and the reasons for the excellence of articles of exceptional merit, and who do not lack courage to go elsewhere when a dealer offers an imitation of any well known article; but, unfortunately, there are some people who do not know, and who allow themselves to he imposed upon. They cannot expect its beneficial effects if they do not get the genuine remedy. Io the credit of the druggists of the United States be it said that nearly all of them value their reputation for professional integrity and the good w ill of their customers too highly to offer imitations of the Genuine—Syrup of Figs manufactured by the California Fig Syrup Co., and in order to buy tbe genuine article and to get its beneficial effects, one has only to note, when purchasing, the full name of the Company— California Fig Syrup Co.— plainly printedon the front of every package.
