Knoxville, Teuu., Sept. 18. — The
Federal grand jnry now sitting in this
city is investigating alleged peonage
cases at seveial railroad camps in this
vicinity where hundreds of negroes are
employed. The investigation is going
on secretly under the direction of a de­
tective sent here by the government
from Washington on the complaint of
numerous negroes to District Attorney
J. R. Penland.
All last week the government build­
ing was crowded with negroes, who
one by one told their tale of woe and
maltreatment before the justice. It is
believed indictments will be found this
week against some prominent railroad
contractors and their subordinates.
The government detective visited the
railroad camps in the role of a man de-
