T his condition gave him the idea of holding an exhibition w here tapestries, ch in a and carp ets could be gathered to g eth er and a g rea t sale held. The then unused chateau of St. Cloud w as tak en for th is purpose, b u t on the day of th e opening a decree of the di recto ry banishing th e nobility w as Is sued, and he w as compelled to q u it F rance, and re tu rn th e follow ing year, and, on th e failu re of his lirst attem p t, o riginate an o th er exhibition, which proved very successful. T his w as held a t th e C hateau de O rsay, w here the house and grounds w ere filled w ith b eau tifu l and useful stuffs and w ares of all varieties. T he success of th is u n d ertak in g caused the governm ent to tak e up the S O M E G R E A T E X P O S IT IO N At Its close th ere rem ained a balance of $750,000 above all expenses. The year 1853 saw tw o C rystal P al ace show s in operation. T h at of New York w as organized by a few influen tial citizens of w ealth as a stock com pany, w ith the end iu view of bringing th e m anufactured goods of the Old W orld here to be placed in com parison w ith those of the New. The other show of the y ear w as th a t held in Dub lin. This, too, w hile very successful as an exhibition, did not a ttr a c t the Intern atio n al Interest It m erited, nor did it in a financial w ay prove a suc cess. The n ex t great exposition w as th a t of P aris, held in 1855. P rep aratio n s for this exposition w ere begun as early as 1853, but up to F eb ru ary , 1854. little progress had been made. So slow did th e work progress th a t the exposi tion, which w as to have- opened on the 1st of May, w as delayed until the 15th of th a t m onth. The main building, the the P alais de ¡’Industrie, w as not built a s a tem porary stru ctu re, as such buildings had previously been, but was intended to rem ain as a perm anent building for exposition purposes.
