To promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the increase of science among them and us— and generally to grant unto all mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as he alohe knows to be best. Given under my hand at the City of New York the third day of October in the year of our Lord 1789. (Signed) George Washington. Celebration of Thanksgiving Day in America can be traced back to the earliest days of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. From the^e the custom spread to ail parts of the United States. Friday, November 21, 1930 Sherman County Budget Committee > Makes Total Cut of $37,718.50 in Amount Proposed For 1931 Taxes More interest was manifested at the meeting of the county budget com mittee for Sherman county at its initial meeting thia week than has ever been evidenced before by the general tax paying public. Conditions have changed very materially since the voters of Sherman county at a general, election some yars ago voted to pay a two years tax in one year and wrote into the state constitution a tax measure tQ continue the paying of the same tax indefinitely. Now, this year, the people all over the state want *1 to pay less taxes than ever*before; in state, county, city and school upkeep. At a meeting of the county budget committee held this week in Moro, the tax budget prepared by the committee is $37,718.60 lesa than the adopted budget under wffiich the county carried in its financial affairs for the year now closing. .This budget as now prepared is subject to approval and modification at d public hearing to be held in the near future at which time final action will be taken as to just how much tax will be voted for county affairs for the coming ydar and also determine where the money will be spent. , < The amount that has been taken from the county budget and the items that will be affected by the reduction are printed below, in tabulated form, showing the items as voted for last year and the same items with their proposed amounts allowed each in comparative columns. The entire coun ty budget is not printed here, only the items that have been chapged in the amounts allowed. , . . ■* ’ Deputy Clerk, sa la ry ................................. .. $ 1,440.00 ‘ $ 1,020.00 T acker, abo of South Carolina, argued 300.00 200.00 Record books and b la n k s........................ .- • • • that it was sot the business of Con- 700.00 Deputy Assessor, s a la r y ................................... 600.00 ! ^ress. to ask fo> a national day of 300.00 Appraisal work .....................................................
