The new card w ill be furnished free of co6t and when ten 10-cent postal savings stamps have been affixed to it, w ill be accepted at any depository office as a deposit of $1 or it may be redeemed in cash. The Postal Savings System was first established, one in each state, on January 1st, 1911, and although ham pered by restrictions as to rate of in terest and maximum amount allowed on deposit, It has shown remarkable progress, until the amount on deposit today is more than $162,000,000 and its depositors have long since passed the half million mark. Many savings banks prior to Its es tablishment felt that the Postal Sav ings System would be a strong com petitor but experience has shown that It draws its patrons largely from among those who otherwise would not place their money in any banking in stitution whatever. The original act of Congress re stricted the total amount to be placed on deposit at $600 And the deposit of this amount was limited to not more than $100 in any one month. Later the monthly limitation was entirely removed and the maximum amount In creased first to $1000 and then to the present amount of $2600.
