Sherman County to The Front COL GE03GE HARVEY Through the efforts of County Superintendent W C Bryant, this county is able to join one of the broadest educational movements now in the state for the benefit of both high school and grammar grade pupils. From the surplus funds left after all expenses of the several of the declamatory contests were paid the committee has purchased a lantern slide stereoptican machin capable of being manipulated with either electric or acyetelene gas, costing without slides, over $100. There are now but six or seven counties in the Btate so provided, of which Sherman county is one, who have formed an association and will exchange slides and il lustrated lectures among each other. Superintendent Bryant has ap plied to the Oregon University at Eugene, the Agricultural College at Corvallis, the State Normal at Monmouth, and officers of theO - W R & N, and Oregon Trunk at Portland for the use and donation of slides which they have that will be of particular interest to school pupils and patrons; particularly the slides of the Oregon Trunk showing the work and results of the dry farms of interior Oregon. In addition Artist Raymond has been given an order for not less than one hundred slides typical of this county; the best of which will go abroad to help advertise this section in a manner that noth ing else could equal at this time. Besides the above the machine will be used extensively in the study of history, physiology, and geography. - / This is one more evidence of the good wrought by the annual field meet and declamatory con tests introduced by Superintend ent Bryant; Other things of equal interest was holding boys in school longer than the former customary time; their physical upbuilding; the annual meeting of the county residents socially; the training of young men and, women to make a suitable public appearance; and hundreds of dollars invested in both books and pictures for the schools. Whereas heretofore The Dalles Military Road Co. was decreed title by the United ¿States Supreme court as against the rights of the Sherman county settlers who had homesteaded all the cultivatable land, practically speaking, under an order of the Secretary of the Interior; and, Whereas, the Eastern Oregon Land Co. are the successors of the said Dalles Military Road Co. and are still in possession of said lands, and, Whereas, the Government here tofore did become interested and sent Thos. BNeuhausen as special investigator to look up and take the testimony and facts in the case, which he did; and, Whereas, there has since that time been a bill passed by the House of Representatives for the relief of the Sherman county set tlers who lost these lands, and which sard bill was presented to the Senate for- their action; and which said Spnate did thereupon and afterwards pass said bill with some slight ammendments, at the close of last session of the Nation al Legislaturef and, Whereas, the said bill was not passed back to the House from the committee to which it was referred, and whereas it is now up to the House of Representa tives to pass the bill again as am- mended by the Senate, now, therefore, that we may get the bill called up in the House and passed as amended, we urge upon every reader of this item whether interested directly or indirectly to take the time and write to Hon W C Hawley, Hon A W Lafferty, Representatives, and Hon Jona than Bourne, and Hon Geo E Chamberlain, Senators, to do their utmost in getting this bill again called up and passed into a law, and then to follow these letters with a second one later. That drones and those who come to pass four years in idle ness and pleasure are not wanted at Reed College was declared by President Foster in his address in the auditorium of the East Port land Branch Library January 5th. The subject of the evening was John Ruskin. Dr Foster said that the college spirit, athletic prow- ness, ability to hit a ball and strug gle on the field, and big enroll ments are not the real elements of true education. He contended with emphasis that college is* a place for work, and that a young person who goes there to while away four years in pleasure is wasting his time and ought to be somewhere else. M ARKETS.
