What the state fair is to Oregon the county fair should be to the county. The man who lives apart from his fellows is sure to deterio rate and if his isolation is com plete he becomes a savage. On the other hand, the man w ho mingles with his fellows, who ap preciates their efforts and who profits by what "they have done, will develop the best there is in him^will increase his knowledge, and will more nearly approach the ideal of civilization. For the county the annual fair affords the best opportunity for these things and teaches by object lessons as no other institution can. T Tke Fat Dog ia tke Family. Earl Barnes, seven years old lived with his parents in Chicago. Earl had a pet d o g ; it bit him in the nose September 13th ; on the 23d rabies appeared and the child was rushed to the Pasteur institute. There w j y no hope of saving the life of the little fellow. In wild agony the lad bit himself and snapped at the furniture; his condition was so rabid that seve ral hospitals refused to admit him. O w ing to his hopeless state he was taken to the cdynty hospital, and to end his agony he was chloro form ed, and kept under the influ ence of the anaesthetic until h e died, b o n ’t you want a pet dog ?
