Story of a Border Maiden Who
Was a Quick and Sure Shot.

mao who wore six shooters and spurs
and shouted lu such a tremeudoua
voice that the rattler» on the prairie

prickly pear. Before there was a ro y­
al fam ily they called the man “ W ills
perlng Ben.* When he came to own
60,000 aerea o f Mod and more cattle
than bo could count they called him
O ’Donnell, “ the cattle king.”
T h e queen had been a Mexican girl
from Laredo. She made a good, mild
colorado-ciaro w ife and even succeed­
ed In teaching Ben to modify bla voice
sufficiently w hile In the house to keep
the dishes from being broken. When
Ben got to be king sbe would sit on
tbe gallery o f the Espinosa ranch and
weave rush mats. W hen w ealth be­
cam e so Irresistible and oppressive

and tbe faculty o f ru lin g . T h e com­
bination was one worth going miles
to see. Joeefa w hile riding her pony
a t a gallop could put Ova out o f six
bullets through a tomato can sw ing­

crouching form of a Mexican lion. His
amber eyeballs glared hungrily. Six
feet from them was the tip o f tbe tail
stretched straight, like a pointer’s

leaping.
Givens did w hat be could. H b six
shooter was tb lrty-flve yards aw ay, ly­
ing on tbe grass. H e gave a loud yell
and dashed between tbe lion and the

T h e “rucua,” a * Givens called it a ft
erw srd , was b rief and som ewhat con­
fused. W hen he arrived on tbe line o f
attack he saw a dim streak In tbe a ir
and heard a conple o f fa in t cracks.
Then a hundred pounds o f Mexican

flattened him w ith a heavy j a r to the
ground. H e remembered calling o u t
“L et up. now; no fa ir gougltfg!” and
then be craw led from under the lion
like a worm, w ltb h b mouth fu ll of

motionless. Givens, feeling aggrieved
and auspicious of fouls, shook h b fist
at the lion and shouted, “ I ’ll raatle you
