The total is S108.500.000. The well sunk in Cow hollow, eight miles south of Vale, Harney ceunty, tapped the great oil lake of the Inland Empire last week. The contractors claim a 150 barrel flow of oil at a depth of 800 feet Lloyd George and Winston Churchill in their fight against the dukes, earls and barons may never hope to gain the favor o f those American women who arc willing to purchase a gilded coronet with a fortune. W hile a jury at Olym pia found Ortis Ham ilton guilty of embez zling from the state during term as adjutant general, another jury in King county found John Rip- linger, former comptroller of Seattle, innocent of a similar charge of wrong doing. Both men will have to face trial again as there are other counts to be ex plained in each case. At the same time, a grand jury in Seattle is in vestigating all sorts o f charges and the air seems to be thick with criminal reports. Spokane, too, has its share of nasty rumors. And top of it all, comes the informa tion from Washington, D. C., that government investigators have found Puget sound the second largest port of entry for the W hite Slave traffic in the United States. It would seem th^t some heroic fumigating process is necessary to clear the atmosphere across the Columbia river. Attorneys for the Standard O il Company o f New Jersey, its sub sidiaries and the seven individuals against whom the government re cently won its dissolution suit, have filed an appeal from the adverse decision of the Federal Circuit court. Sixty-five instances in which the trial court is alleged to have erred are cited as reasons for appealing. Collectively, the alignments of error are that the evidence did not show a violation of the Sherman anti-trust law. New England cotton and wool factors are engaged in a great race for the world’s markets. In New Bedford $10,000,000 is being spent in new cotton mills to get ahead of the cotton centers of Lowell and Fall River. At the same time more than $12.000.000 is being spent in the erection of new wool en mills at Lawrence to make worsted yarns or cloth.
