The vigorous agitation started in
New York for a relentless invest-
gation and prosecution of the
sugar trust ought to bear some kind
of wholesome and tangible fruit.
There is a stage of public sentiment
concerning outrageous offenders
against public decency and com ­
mon honesty that cannot be with­
stood, even when such offenders
are rich and powerful and badly
entangled with political official
machinery. Such a sentiment is
rapidly developing against the
thieving sugar trust.
It is a wise oracle who knows
what to say next when he has
called public attention to an evil
endured or a danger threatening.
Such a “prop het ¡6 James J. Hill,
unquestionably the great man of
the great New West. H e has
pointed out that the one indis-
pcnsible industry in this country,
the growing of grain to feed itself,
is in danger from lax methods of
agriculture and a truly American
habit of rushing off to new lands
in preference to keeping up the
fertility of lands severely cropped.
T h e new lands are about exhaust-
-<d and American enterprise is fast
filling up the Canadian west. It
is only just to say that Mr. Hill
does not write as an alarmist. He
has abundant precedent in history
for the very w’orst that may be­
fall the great food producing in­
industry that lies at the base of
natural prosperity because what it
produces it brought from nature
and actually added to the sum of
hum an wealth.
James J. Hill stands today with
out a rival in the transportation
world and he will be virtually in
com m and of all the railroads con­
trolled by both the Standard Oil
g ro u p ‘and the Morgan crowd.
T h e day when all the railways of
th e country will be under the con­
trol of one interest and have bpt
one head is approaching rapidly.
W hen that comes to pass the rail­
road organization will employ
m ore men, receive and disburse
m ore money, do more business
and have more power than the
governm ent of the United States.
It will be in a position to control
the government itself. There is
little danger, however, that this
enorm ous power of control will
be exercised. W hen it is conclu­
sively shown that one interest and
o n e man can successfully conduct
the transportation business of this
country, the men who own the
vast consolidated system will matt
overtures to sell it to the govern
m ent at its physical valuation, ae
cepting in payment therefor the
bonds of the government.

W hen the son of a great rail­
road magnate condems the govern­
ment land lottery’ plan of dispos-
posing of land, and 6ays he is
ashamed of the money his road
made out of the transportation of
the land seekers, he strikes a heavy
blow against a scheme that had
already met with great disfavor.
Apart from the moral stigma of a
government being engaged in
what is, to all intents and purpose,
a lottery, the plan involves a vast
and unnecessary expense and
therefore works injustice to the
many thousand who fail to draw a
lucky number. The government
will have to devise some more
equitable scheme of disposing of
its remaining lands. -
