were there Joined In tbe assertion that
the señora was au angel, w ith hopes
for their own special needs.
Ida Lovejoy, one of the four girls,
<>l*ened her lips to say some flattering
word, but the words were suddenly
checked as her fascinated eyes fell
upon a sui*erb solitaire diamond ring
which the señora generally wore In
memory o f the departed General V a l­
dez.
The señora had many other Jewels,
but she loved thia ring beat. 'W h ile
the four young girls, boarders In the
same house, had beeu there she had
fancied that she ought to have tbe
Jeweler look to the safety o f the dla
mond In Its setting and so took the
ring from her hand and put It on her
little ring tree which stood on her
dressing table near the w’lndow. Its
fire and luster dazzled the longing
eys of Ida, and she caught her breath.
Rhe had often seen It on tbe plump
hand of the señora, but never had It
seemed so beautiful ns now. She felt
a great desire to ask the kind Spanish
lady to loan It to her to wear to the
ball as she had loaned her valuable
lace mantilla to Minnie. I f she could
wear such a ring perhaps the floor
walker, Charlie Edwards, might take
notice o f her.
Ida w«s poor, very poor, and worked
In the store where the other girls were
employed. She. like all the employees
of the store, was expected to be at
this ball. The big store gave a ball
every w inter and an excursion every
summer for Its employees.
Ida had
never been able to advance herself
somehow, and after tl/fee yea*rs she
was still among ths learners.

salary was scarcely enough to pay
her board. And she loved beautiful
things.
The supper bell rang, aud w ith a

she went up to her room, descending
almost at once to the bn t broom, where
