Michael Tlernan had been sent to

up religiously, and his associates were
respectable people of the working
class.
Mike was a good workman,
but when the commercial ¡tante of
1007 came on, w ith thousands o f oth

grounds, far enough from other houses
to enable them to work without being

women of the family, awakeued by a
bright light being flashed In her face,
began to scream. Dolan ordered her
to keep quiet, meanwhile feeling for
' the electric sw itch, and when he found

partially satisfied his conscience that

burglar. The situation to the Inmates
of the bouse was appalling. The wo­
man who had been stilled had fainted,
and the master of the house was try­
ing to revive her. He turned .to Mike
and said:
"You are not even respectable bur­
glars. None but the most contempts*,
ble will injure a woman.”
"We’re driven to It, sir,” said Mlk>.
**We can’t get work, and our fam ilies
are starving.”
« At that moment a door opened and
a little boy In a white nightie, tumbled
curia falling over his forehead, under
which hl» eyes blinked In the sudden
light, came out into the hall.
“Papa," he said, "what has this man
a false face on for?"
This w as 'too much for Mike. He
snatched the boy lu hla arms, crying
at the same time:
"I’ve got one ilka hltn at home.”

At the same moment Murphy came
out of one of the bedrooms with a bag
full of Jewels. Seeing Mike caressing
a child, he called to Dolan below: *
"Mike’s weakening!"
W ithout a word l>olan rushed up­
stairs. Mike heard him coihiug and
put down the child Ixdnn rati up to
Mike and hammered him with the
butt of his revolver. Then, having
quieted, as he supposed, the better
nature o f hla assistant, he resumed his
pillaging. An hour afÇer entertfig the
premises the burglars left with the
usual threa) to kill any one giving ap
alarm wlthlu a certulu time.
The next morning Dolan read an
account of the. robbery In the morning
papers and noted a statem ent that
bop«** were entertained that the bur­
glar who had weakened If offered lin-

tbn e had separated before daylight,
and he could not reach Mike till even-
big. During the day he resolved to

Mike has no fears till Dolan nnd Mur»
phy shall have served a tw enty, year
sentence, but that Is n long while. In
the meantime he la. working hard,
the only sore s(M>t In his rnlnd being
his one connection with criminals.
Mike Tleruan was turned to crime
through an unselfish motive, love for
his child. He was fum ed away from
crim e by being reminded of his boy
by tbe child be had taken In hb arms.
Surely tbe Innocence o f childhood Is
All powerful.

men must be quirk of eye, alert uml
with little fear for life or limb. The
drive must be kept com pact und mov­
ing nt whatever cost and the more so
If the spring flood be ou the wane or
of less volume than usual. A ground­
ing or Itnpelcxx jit mining of the logs
would mean great loss and perhups
ruin to the lumlu-rman.
So when a log here and there Is
drawn aw ay from its fellows, caught
by a n ,e d d y or counter current, und
drifts Into a cove or Inlet or against a
bank It Is left, behind foe Inter recov--
ery unless the river gang Is strong
enough to detail som e one to hurry
forward the laggard.
The D. II. Joltes Lumlu»r company
had an unusually big drive that spring
for various reasons, ch ief aiming

LOOKING DOWN YUKON AVENUE.
One of the m ost traveled highw ays o f the A laska-Y ukon-P aclfle E x­
position will be the street to which has been given the nam e o f Yukon
Avenue. Yukon Avenue m akes Its way across the exposition grounds
from west to east, and the ends are represented by K londike C ircle near
the entrance, and Nom e Circle on which fronts the classic F orestry bu ild ­
ing. It ..crosses the roaring Cascadtis on oriental bridges of handsom e
design, and froth Its central part the buildtngB of H awaii and A laska,
backed by th«* enorm ous federal structure, are directly to the north.
Just to tho west of K londike Circle the Pay Streak w inds In a general
direction from north to south, and at the eastern end the land gives
way precipitously to the shores of Lake W ashington. It Is on thlB beau­
tiful shore o f the lake the natural am pltheatre Is located, and nature has
so quaintly formed this deligh tfu l spot, that sm all effort has been re­
quired of man to transform it Into as perfect an exhibition place as Is
possible. Its curving, slopin g sides com plete a sem l-clrcle, and from Its
tiers of tow ering Beats 30,000 spectators may w itness the en tertainm ents
with n o ,p o ssib ilities of occupying a sin gle undesirable seat.
A w onderful variety o f architectural display is show n by the many
buildings through which Yukon Avenue passes, and during Its course the
visitor passes from m an-m ade m onum ents through parts of m agnificent
forests w hose grandeur has never b«»en marred by the d estructive praft
of M am m on’s discipl«?s. From every sldg the line o f horizon Is defined
by m ountains whose lin es are delineated In perpetual snow , and stretch ­
ing away us far as the eye can travel rest the w aters o f Puget Sound.
