Many persons are citing Lincoln’s gloomy prediction
about the result in the presidential election of 1864. as an
evidence that he was not a prophet
Gov. Hughes seems
to have fallen into this mistake. The reference, of course,
is made to Lincoln’s memorandum to his cabinet in the
summer of 1864, in which he cited his belief that McClel­
lan would he chosen president in the campaign of that
year. Betpiuse the election, a few months later, turned out
the other way by a large majority, present day critics ac­
cuse Lincoln of an inability to read the signs of flie Times.
However, it is the critics, and not Lincoln, who are
astray. A good many things took place between Lincoln's
gloomy forecast of the prospects of the campaign and the
actual voting. In the interval Farragut captured Mobile;
Sherman drove Hood out of Atlanta; and Sheridan swept
Early, and the rest of the Confederates out of the Shenan­
doah valley. “Farragut has knocked all the planks out of
the Chicago platform,” exclaimed Seward, when news of
the fall of Mobile arrived. The reference there being to
the “peace-at-any-price-platform” on which “Little Me”
stood, as the“democratio candidate.
Thus Farragut, Sherman and Sheridan, broke the
hack hone of the rebellion. The situation in favor of the
re-election of Lincoln was changed so swiftly, and so com­
pletely, th a t’Fremont, the candidate of the radical repub­
licans, withdrew in favor of Lincoln a few weeks before
election. Here are the causes of the .divergence between
Lincoln’« forecast in August rind the result of the voting in
November. At the time the Lincoln memorandum was
prepared the outlook for the republicans in the election
was decidedly dark. But all-was changed by the victories
of the Union forces by land and water.
This is how it occurred that Lincoln received 212 elec­
toral‘votes in the cahvass, as compared with 21 for McClel­
lan. The latter day chroniclers, when looking at these
’ figures, say that the result of the campaign of 1864 was at
no time in doubt. The men who were on the ground at the
time, and who were better able to see the actual conditions,
saw many things which are not visible how, and could es­
timate the situation more accurately than others can, 45
years after those great and stirring. events.

All officers shall be élected from the qualified members of the
League by ballot, and it shall require a majority vote of the members
present to elect. The election of all officers shall be held annually, on
the second Tuesday in November, and quarterly meeting! of the League
shall be held on the second Tuesday of February, May, August and
November, and called meetings shall be subject to the majority vote of
the League.
