F o rm e r T im e ly N aw Y o rk G e n a ro a ity m an— H o w S o c ie ty to Som a W o rk to H e r S o c ia l L e a d •r a h ip. Mrs. William Astor, for many yearn the acknowledged leader of New York society, sat one day lu a window of her Fifth avenue mansion watching a gang of meu who were excavating a ditch In which to lay the pipes of the New York Steam Heating company. The perspiration was pouring off the men's faces, and an exhauster! look hud settled over their countenances. She remembered that they had work ed continuously through the warm days of the previous week and, calling her butler, seut him to b rin g th e fore man of the gang Surprised nud won dering what could be the matter, the foreman was ushered Into the presence of Mrs. Astor. To his still greater sur prise, he was luvlhkl to form his men In line and march them up to the front of the house. Mrs. Astor then ex plained that the meu must be wearied by their continuous work In the warm weather and said that she wished to give them a little money to purchase refreshment for themselves at their lunch hour. The men were then form ed In line, and as each one passed the front steps he received a doUar from the hands of the butler. Meantime Mrs. Astor hatched the distribution from her window. The hundred or so men quietly expressed their thanks as »they received the little gift. They were employed by Park Coibuilssloner Crtmmtns. One man who after receiv ing hit dollar again took his place In Hue and attempted to pass along a second time was discharged by the foreman. ; Mrs. Astor, the bead of the Astor family, attended during her European tour k" garden party In the English midlands. Mrs. Astor's dignity has been likened to that of a duchess of the old school; hence a certain young officer should have been wiser at the garden party than to say to her as he took out his cigarette case, "I »ope smoking Incom mode you, madam?" ‘ “I don't know really," Mrs. Aator an s we red. "No gentleman »has ever smoked In my presence." Amiable and gentle In disposition, Mrs. Astor has been devoid of the as parsed feline traits one Is apt to asso ciate with women of fashion. Thefe was never much for her to aspire to. One of fortune's children, she went Into the world equipped with wealth, brains and breeding. She never has l>een compelled to fawn upon the loftier woman. Khe avoided the humiliation, the character destroying experience of pursuing social position abroad. Her | . servants, who have adored her, could "'talk forever about her little kindly deeds, her consideration for others and her unselfishness. In her taste she hns l»een ns simple as the woman who used to hem, her blankets. How to Curs Sleeplessness. Sleeplessness generally Is ouly ex- pertertced by fieople of nervous temper ament and Is caused, as a rule, by an overabundance of blood In the head. The most natural remedy for this Is something that will cause the Wood to flow to the proper channels. Friction applied to the surface of the entire body will draw the blood away from the head. After undressing briskly rub the entire surface of the bmly with a flesh brush or a coarse, dry towel. If this falls to bring -relief, place the hands and feet in us hot water as can be borne nnd drink a glass of hot milk or a cup of hot cocoa o r chocolate This rarely falls to bring relief.- .
