T h e M e n in g itis “ E p id e m ic. aogl m i ii—s Dr. C. H. Wheeler, Portland., . There is no occasion for alarm over continued reports of an impending epidemic of spinal meningitis in Portland We always expect an occasional case of this kind during cold, wet winter months. In fact I believe there is no more spinal meningitis in Portland this winter than is ordinarily found here at this season of the year. It frequently hap pens that some other disease is thought to be meningitis, and the report is crodited, while the contradiction of the report, after a correct diagnosis of the trouble, hardly ever reaches the public. As an instance of this kind, I was a few days ago called to see a small child that was reported to have spinal meningitis, but upon examination 1 found it to be suffering from infantile convulsions brought on from teething. Of course the prevalence of an epidemic of spi nal meningitis in parts ef a neighboring state has had a great deal to do with alarming the people of Oregon, The germs of this disease cannot stand warm, sunshiny weather and in a few days all traces of this diseases will disappear. • 1 1 1 1 1 1 W H ; • C H EA P W O O D FOR SA L E The Observer can furnish first growth fir on board cars for $ 1.50 per cord.
