Just tell them for me that if they will inves tigate the power question real thor ough they will find out that there is nothing in it. Last September 1 8[>ent about two weeks in Portland and valley towns, investigating for Ione, and learned that power can be furnished cheaper, and as you know, a great deal more satisfacto ry with steam, than with gasolene, by using crude oil for fuel, such as the railway company use. I have been thinking what an ideal 9|X>t Grass Valley has for a plant of this kind in the Park grounds, where we know good water can be had very cheap by using that spring. Fuel oil would run by gravity from the depot to a cistern built in the earth to receive it near the plant. This oil can be bought in Portland for 70c per bbl, in tank carB of 13,000 gallons, and three bids contain tho same heat as one ton of coal. En gine builders Inform us that from 6 to 7 lhs of coal furnish one horse power for one hour, which is 285 h. p. hours at $2.10, with fuel oil at 70c per bbl, now add the freight. 285 li p. hours with gasolene at 17c, would make $7.12>£, $5 for freight, and still saving cartage, $5.02. “As your plant was insured for $4 ,000 I see no reason why Grass Valley should not have a better one than ever from the same money. Do not think I am trying to “butt in.” I am just giving you the bene fit of what I havo learned in the way of generating power. We are getting along very well here but ter ribly overloaded and have trouble of getting gasolene. Most of our residence lights are on meter at .15 ot k. w. and that is by far the most ■atisfactory way.
