THE PRESIDENTIAL VOTE.
Under the heading: How Can we
Make Prosperity stay) the Engineer­
ing News presents a very interesting
discussion of ways of mitigating the
severity of hard times. T he influence
of the Spanish war expenditures in
stimulating prosperity, is dwelt upon.
V ndoubtedly the demand of the gov­
ernment for supplies, added to the al­
ready giowing business activity from
natural causes, was an important fac­
tor in the tremendous revival of in
dustry now in evidence on every
hand. They add appreciably to the
existing demand for com m o n ie s and
labor and therefore exercise an impor­
tant stimulating influence on the gen­
eral industrial conditions.
It appears to be a pretty well set
tied fact that Mr. Bryan is to be the
democratic nominee next year and
Mr. McKinley that of the republican
party. In If 96 Mr. Bryan received
l i f electoral votes—224 were neces­
sary. Sf, ¡n 1906, Mr. Bryan succeeds
in retaining all the states carried by
him in 189$ he will «till lack ¿5 votes.
