Over 35,(MX) visitors - many from out of state • have registered this sum m er at Portland General Elec tric com pany’« new museum and observatory located on the rim of the sjiectaeular Deschutes river gorge overlooking the $60 mil lion Round Butte hydroelectric project. A construction force of 589 men is now working on the project, which includes a dam tow ering 150 feet high and generating near ly a Billion kilow att-hours of electricity annually. The museum and observatory, constructed by PGE as a perm an ent feature of the project, includes a gallery, displays of artifacts, and wildlife native to the Central Oregon area and a large model of the dam, its reservoir and fish passage facilities. Geologic specimens of the re gion are on display along w ith photographs of Central Oregon wildlife taken by Joe Van Worm- er of Bend, a nationally known wildlife photographer. Indian handw ork and artifacts also are exhibited along w ith in form ation on Billy Chinook, a Wasco scout for whom the W arm Springs Indians have named the reservoir which will be formed Ixhim l the dam.
