Early Christians, searching for something popular to attach their holidays to utilized this pagan holiday and transferred it into a religious time, decorated with paguentry possible to an imaginative and prosperous peo- l’h‘ Certainly the C hristians have im proved it. Instead of a time of joy over the promise of longer days,w arm er w eather and better hunting, all of which were very laudable, it is a time of spiritual revival and dedication to an ideal of brotherly love. Like their an cestors C hristians are hoping for belter times but not so entirely in a physical sense. The obser vance has therefore m atured. WIIE.YI PROGRAMS Oregon W heat Leaguers and the national are hopeful th at they may get their cherished two-price plan through congress and duly signed into law this session of eongiess. It lias been changed m aterially since McNary and Haugen first introduced it at tne request of northw est grain men back in the tw enties and it has some better features. It would gradually tend to le- duce the surplus and it would reduce the acreage in wheat very drastically it seems by putting bushels instead of acres as the m easuring stick for production. It would perm it paym ent of the parity price for wheat eaten dom- esticallj anti it would cause pro duction of enough iced grain to scare tne mid-western corn grow- er.- ; Some of these things are good, The idea will be opposed in congress by that idea generally supported by the Farm bureau. That organization would gradual ly get governm ent out of tne wheat business by reducing p ar ity prices until wheat stood on its own feet and a farm er woul 1 grow it at his own risk—or pro fit. The way the two-price plan is now proposed it would continue the rather strict controls the governm ent has on wheat men; the farm bureau plan would gradually release them. The new adm inistration is ex pected to favor more governm ent instead of less but the farm bu reau controls a lot of votes in the nation's big farm country. The battle will be w orth watching. REORGANIZATTON Governor Hatfield has unfolded his plan for state reorganization of adm inistrative bodies, that is, it is partly unfolded. We cannot ay w hether we will like the pro gram but we are sure we like the idea, for the legislature has been building bureaus and boards un til the house is overflowing with them. N either is there reason for tne legislature to sniff at the gulier- natorial proposals; legislators have l>een studying the same thing for fifteen years and those who studied most are most con vinced that change would be beneficial. We do not think th a t it is a m atter to lx? decided in one session ol a legislature busy as it will lie with dozens of problems needing immediate attention.
