A display of the ribbons won at the Ju n io r Horse show at The Dalles last week by Nancy and Janey McKean, and Sharon and Leo Coelsch has lieen made at Beef’os «lining room. The state highway commission received bids June 30 for con struction of a 110 foot reinforced concrete bridge across Grass Val ley canyon on the Lonerock road. It will l>e at a different place and the county will construct the ap proaches. The bridge now in use is old and apparently in poor repair. Mrs. Leta Eslinger and her grand d aughter Alice Eslinger drove to Hillsboro last week end for a family reunion of the New ton family which included Mrs. W alter Newton of Corvallis, the m other, and Mrs. Keith Byland of Arizona, Mrs. Jam es Thomas of Hillsboro, Mrs. Dell Eakin of The Dalles and Mrs. Eslinger. W alter Eslinger and family were there from Astoria and said he was trying to get out of the navy after 29 years and if so, will go to hospital adm inistrative work in Seattle. Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Root and family spent several days the first of last week at Klamath Falls anti C rater Lake. Son Curtis, who will en ter OTI in the fall, took his entrance exams while there. The Roots stayed overnight at the C rater Lake lodge, and reported several deep snow hanks sfill visible in parts of the park. Mr. and Mrs. Je rry Barnett and children spent several «lays re cently enjoying a short vacation. They drove to Seattle June 14, taking their boat. A fter spending one night on Mercer Island with Mr. and Mrs. Kendrick Barnett, they launched the boat at Shil- shole Bay anil enjoyed sightsee ing. I he first few «lays they were plagued with chilly, damp w eath er, hut were rew arded by sunny w eather for the return trip. E n route home they visited relatives in Bremerton, and proceeded south from there to Hood Canal, where they found excellent cam p ing ami (mating facilities, includ ing a pleasant sandy beach for swimming. They returned to W as co June 17 feeling much refresh ed from the little outing. Marian Rebekah lodge helil the last meeting of the year on June 22. We practiced figure-eights and sidestepping along with the usual things. O thers took tests. We had a chance to swim liefore lunch and most of us did. We each brought a sack lunch and Mrs. Rathbun served drinks. The Hi-Yu horse club held a m eeting Ju n e 25 at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. K. McKean with our horses. We practiced show m anship and horsem anship. Some tests were passed. We took sack lunches and Vel ma McKean served drinks Later on Mrs. McKean served maple bars. The next meeting will lie July 10 at the fairgrounds, with our horses at 1:00 p. m. Four m em bers of the Hi Yu 4-H horse club participated in the Ju n io r Horse Show in The Dalles. Bringing home ribbons were: Nancy McKean 1st in In te r m ediate Showmanship; Janey Mc Kean 1st In Ju n io r Showmanship; I<eo Coelsch 5th in Junior Show m anship and 5th in Ju n io r Horse m anship; Sharon Coelsch 1st in Matched Pair w ith Ja n Muller.
