T hat is, say the w i ' i ones of the propliesying b re th re n , if w e do not succum b to inflation and can som ew ay s»*ttle th e arm race. So far not one of the econom ists noted lias said a good word for in flation although som e |>ollticlans like the idea of h u rry in g thing along by th a t devi e. H istory teaches that it has alw ays Ix-en d lsa ste ro u s to any nation, but po l iticians do not all re id h istory. If we w an t to grow faste r we can save m ote m oney to invest in the econom y. It is estl- m at.si that folks w ould have to Invest ten pen- nt in order to grow th ree percen t and it now a p p e a rs that they woul ra th e r spend it. E conom ists do not generally he lieve that in terest rate s will go dow n very soon. In terest rates an? h ig h er nearly every place else and money goe w here it i best t n a t e . so If we held ou r in terest rate down m ore money w ould go to E urope w hich i boom ing and borrow ing and we woul 1 have less to Invest .it home and could th erefo re grow only at a slow er rate. T h at estim ate, we are sure, does n ot include th e sm aller flats. T he flats along the Jo h n T)ay have long been one of th e co u n ty ’s negletteli assets. Some of th em contain 00 acres, enough for a big irrig ated farm . We have alw ays operated our cattle business along the John Day back war.is, p u ttin g a ttle onto the riv er In sp rin g and 1- eding them d ry feed on top in the w in ter. If feed w as grow n along the riv e r cattle could w in ter the ie m uch i»etter than on top w here the w ind blows m uch cold e r and the frost bites m uch d eep er. It is nearly alw ays w arm along the river, w arm er, anyw ay. I' is probable th at th e new ly leveled lan 1 will l»e p u t into p e r m anent p astu re for cattle. How’- ever, that is probably not the best use for it. Any of the liottom s along the Jo h n Day will grow fine vegetali! s and fru it and w ill in a lin e them ea rlie r than any p la te in the n o rth w est.
