WHY THE KICKING
From a regular feature in the
Oregon Journal we note th at both
production and orders for west
ern pine are up for the last re
ported week, that United States
car loadings are down along with
the price of grains.
However, all livestock prices arc
up, steers being $5.50 more than
a year ago (sounds like a boost
for more stock and less grain)
and also hank clearings are up
and building perm its are much
more than a year ago.
Now th at i*n’t a bad rejxirt.
Not everything is booming but
more items are favorable than un
favorable.
One of the reasons
for depressions Is the fear of the
public that things will be worse.
Indications are th at the public
Isn’t scared nearly so badly as
are the politicians because retail
trade* is good in most places.
So, as a topic for w orry It seems
that the present state of the
economy may soon give way to
the fate of a favorable txiseball
team.
Last week in this column we
mentioned the fact that non-fic
tion couki be interesting. I won
der why it is that peo> le shy
away from reading non-fiction
books.

fiction books are so arranged
