Charlie Kuypers and Dick Yo cum have each tried a good size acreage of chemical summer fal low again this spring. Dalapon was used on both of these farms. A research trial on chemical summer fallow Is located on the Richelderfer ranch in China Hollow. The trial was established by the Oregon agricultural exper iment station. Three dates of ap plication were applied this spring. Gibberellic acid, the miracle plant-growth booster, can also speed up the process by which soli microorganisms unlock plant nutrients and add nitrogen from the air to the soil, according to research at the Oregon State col lege agricultural experiment sta tion. Small doses of gibberellic’acid added to soil increased the general activity of soil microorganisms, report bacteriologists K C. Lu, C. M. Gllmour, and W’. B. Bollen. However, they emphasized that more study is necessary before they will know if the use of gib berellic acid to make soil more fertile will be commercially prac tical. In their experiments, the scien tists found that the microorgan isms started decomposing gibber ellic acid a few days after it was added, and that it was several weeks before the material disap peared completely. During this time, the decomposition of soil organic matter and other added organic materials was speeded up. This should Increase the release of plant nutrients Into the soil, the scientists say. The acid also seemed to stimu late the nitrogen-fixing bacteria naturally present in soil, result ing in significant Increases in amount of nitrogen being added to the soil from the air. H A R D TO CATCH A recipe for some sort of early day ralfblt dish started otf with the command “first catch the rab bit.” Efforts of Oregon legislators to take the last bit of hide off taxpayers may wind up the same way. It should be noted that tax payers can flee like an antelope.
