Someplace on the ranch, after all these bountiful xains, there is some crop that is growing wonderfully and that is going to be good enough that you think it should have more than ordinary attention, something the neighbors ought to see. That is what we are talking about—things like that. In some especially fat piece of soil there are wheat heads “a foot long” and b;g as a strongs man’s finger. Such heads make wonderful sheaves of wheat for display and after the fair they are good to send back to Kansas or Pennsylvania to show the folks how we raise wheat in Sherman county. Pick them when they’re right and bring them to the fair. Down in the garden there are some onions bent on becoming the biggest onions ever grown; or a squash that seems destined to grow bigger than any squash ever before; or a little green tomato on a big vigorous bush that will be the reddest and smoothest by fair time; or some beans that will drag the ground by early September when the fair is on.v THE DATES ARE SEPTEMBER 6—7—8—9 THIS YEAR And if there’s nothing outside that attracts interest, there is time to put up some fruit in a particular way so it shows off to best advantage; or some colorful fruit or berry that will sparkle when made into jelly to attract the eye of a beauty loving judge; and there is time to do some fancy work while the men are in the harvest field. Of course those with fat calves will keep them fat and slick, those with colts will teach them to lead and show off, those with lambs will have them trimmed and white in time for the fair. That goes without saying. And there will be room for more such animals this year because the old exhibitors are always moving on. A little extra care to the rose bushes, a shot of fertilizer to the cucumbers, some suckering of the corn may make a first prize win ner at the county fair—and may make it a bigger and better fair.
