Three tables of pinochle ami three tables of canasta were In play with Mr. and Mrs. Benton Barnett winning high and Mr. Petersqp and Mrs. Atlee Wilson low in pinochle. High win- ners in canasta were Chub John- son and Mrs. Mae Fowler, while Sam Brock and Miss Elliott re ceived low. The grange plans parties every two weeks if possible this winter. A lunch was served by the grange women after the scores were add ed. Mr. and Mrs. Dick Smith and son were recent visitors of Mr. and Mrs. Bill O’Brien. Mr. Smith who was a former teacher here at Rufus now teaching near Beaver, Oregon. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Bryant of Seattle visited old friends at Ru fus last week. While here they were overnight guests of the Bill Hucks and the Atlee Wilsons. Friends of Ross Guilford will lx? sorry to hear he is no better. He has been moved from the hos pital to a rest home for awhile. Ross lived here most of his life so Is well known by residents of the north end of Sherman county" Twenty-four members were out when Rufus grange met Thurs day evening. Harland McDonald, master, opened the business meet ing. Insurance agent Bill Huck, gave some questions and answers on safety. Mr. and Mrs. Rolland Johnson gave a report of their time spent at National grange In Spokane, Wn. Rufus grange has set Novem ber 28 at 2 p. m. to practice for the third and fourth degree. The membership were reminded that the next grange meeting Decem ber 2 there will be a 6:30 potluck supper preceding the meeting, the degree work will be put on that night. The members were also remin ed that the Sherman County Pom ona grange meets at Rufus Satur day November 27 with a dinner at noon. The calm and quietness of them offering Insufficient com- I>etitlon to the excitement of cities;their dark and silent streets having less interest than the gar ish brightness of larger towns. There ate compensation« to liv ing in a small town, many of them. One gets to know people and really there isn’t anything more fun than people. Mechanical things, gadgets, exhibitions are fun, too, but they cannot com pare with people. People in small towns are seen dally, talked to often and their peculiarities known. In the big cities people march by as If a division of in fantry was going by; in small towns one learns to know a few of them. When we have a wedding every one knows the bride and is happy with her; a funeral brings sincere regret for the deceased had a place in the lives of everyone. We share the lives of others and they share ours and all are enriched thereby. We are i*H,ple. Individ uals. We are not merely custom ers, aeqaintanees, prospects. When we have a football game we know all the players, his num ber, bis parents, his abilities. We walk up and down the sidelines and cheer the team. They are not like actors on a huge screen hut Individual boys who tomorrow will Is» taking a different part in town activities. There are opportunities in small towns, probably the best there are anywhere. Small towns can us doctors, dentists, beauticians, mechanics, businessmen of all kinds. The rewards are not so startling as In larger towns but the success is more assured. If one is a good Individual be can do all right in a small town and the competition seldom presses him out of shape as It sometimes does In the city. We small towners are Individ uals; we live our own lives. Per haps the decline of individualism comes from the movement to the cities. In cities people are cogs In vast machines, units of demand and production, figures In statis tics; In small towns people are In dividuals. Ami we like to be In dividuals, I’EW THINGS PERFECT The footKall squad has finished Its season except for a post-season scrimmage or two and the mem ories that will always be a part of It. The boys won all their games but one and that the last one, and the one they wanted to win most. They hail a good season, win ning all games but one anti often by comfortable scores. The play ers got some good training out of the game and the effort to get to play. Some who didn’t try hard enough missed some games. It will lie that way all through life. It Is entirely possible that more is learned by losing than by winning although a mixture of the two is better than too much of either. The boys were not dis couraged by their defeat by Un ion last year and were determin ed to win In 1951.
