from Information gathered by lis­
tening does there seem to lie any
doubt that I’hul Patterson will be
elected governor come November

There are reasons for that. Pat­
terson has been a good governor
since he was thrown into thgt job
when Doug .McKay was appointed
to the president’s cabinet. He has
not been a regional gdvernor, ei­
ther, or one who centered his in­
terest and his appointments in an
area where he was best acquaint­
ed. Patterson has gotten about
the state and listened carefully
to the problems of citizens of all
kinds. Sherman county has seen»
more of him than it sees of most

at the county fair and as speaker
at the historical society picnic in
June.
He has studied his decisions and
made them. Then he has stuck
with them. His work in aiding
settlement of the lumber strike
surely helped the state’s econ­
omy. He has tried—and with some
success—to curtail some of the
state’s expenses.
Patterson had an excellent rep­
utation as a legislator. It was not
known whether he had the self
reliance to say "Yes” and "No”
when he was an executive whose
word was final. He has proven
that he can. We look forward to
four years of sound administra­
tion under him.
Joe Carson, his opponent, was
once a conservative Democrat
who has apparently lieen beguiled
by new dealers running on the
same tit ket. While his adminis­
tration as mayor of Portland may
have caused a few raised eye-
iirows he was at that time sound
on financial matters. He was at
one time a member of the Mari­
time commission and was for
many years a lawyer in the same
office as John Hall.
If the polls and the conversa­
tions are correct the voters have
