How many dwarf calves are produced each year? How many of our beef cattle are carriers? We still have no exact answers. Yet, ranchers, stockmen, researchers, and others concern ed do agree that dwarfs in both registered and commercial beef herds have been increasing. This can only mean a growing num ber of apparently normal animals carry the dw arf gene—and may breed dwarfs. No major beef cat tle breed or line of breeding is known to be dw arf free. Surprisingly, there's eviuence of a strong Inadvertent tendency toward selection of carrier ani mals for breeding purposes. It may be due to their slightly ear lier m aturity or possibility to a subtle influence of the dw arf gene on conformation. Ranchers fear dw arfism sim ply because it costs them money. A dwarf calf is practically w orth less as a beef producer. It repre sents a loss of both the normal calf it might have been and the seasons investm ent that was made in Its mother. Confusion and misinformation still exists about dwarfism in beef cattle, states County Agent Thompson. The following Is a short dlcusslon of what we know about dwarfism. The destructive power of beef- cattle dwarfism, like that of an Iceberg, is mostly hidden. W hat we can see—a fairly small num ber of dwarf calves—may not look dangerous. Yet beneath the surface lurks a natural force cap able of great damage to this coun try ’s beef industry. Fortunately, we know enough about dwarfism to limit economic losses from it. And research has made a good sta rt toward better control methods. One result is the profllometer, an instrum ent for detecting the slight forehead bulge that may mark normal ap pearing animals as potential dw arf breeders.
