J . . . . . . . . . . 'J U N E 20, U TAX VALUATIONS There has been some discus »ion over the maternent that some counties of Oregon are val- ued at a smaller figure than in the thirties. There are so many figure« end >o many year, that almoet any thing can be ahowji. A comparison of the figures for 1932 and for 1951, a period of 20 year», Indicates that there is much more equalization now than then. It is high time, too, because the advent of the basic school fund has made equalisa tion more important than It used to be. True, no state property tax is paid. True, also, that one will be paid if the state keeps on spending $20,000,000 more than It takes In each biennium. For instance in 1932 Sherman county paid .006259 percent of the state tax and In 1951 It would have paid .005421 percent. Under the inequitable method of distribution of the basic school fund this county pays in $164,000 and receives $50,000. That is bad enough but it is not so bad as it once was. Josephine county, the states poorest tB9* wise, - used to pay but .007206 and now la up to .012156 or almost twice as much. It still rides pretty easy In school equalization. . The position of Multnomah county has also Improved for contrary to popular supposition the wealthiest county pays more than it receives from state taxes. Back in 1932 it paid .362578 per cent of the state’s taxes and now It pays but .344897 percent Usually the changes have been for the better. ’ This does not mean that valuations are correct. They are notoriously Inaccurate. But It is more important th it there be equalisation between counties than that valuations oe accurate. That can come later. MORE INFLATION On July 1 the federal govern ment will begin selling bonds to banks to finance borrowing above the budget. This will in- f«ate the currency to the extent practiced. Sale of government bonds to investors removes mon ey from circulation until the government spends It anyway; sale of bonds to banks doubles the amount of money Involved. The banks give the government credit-yjust like they do with any borrower—and the amount of money Involved Is doubled. * Reasons given for this Infla tionary move is that the people haven’t been buying government bonds very fast and there isn't much reason why they should when the lack of faith in this administration is recognized. But it must be admitted Chat the government hasn’t made much of an effort to become worthy of loans. A better reason may be found In the very apparent fact that this is an election year. A good shot of inflation will boom busi ness, perhaps raise wages, and make for an appearartce of gener al prosperity that la designed to keep Lhe Incumbents In office. Onnsyderlng the well known effects of inflation the above 1« one that puts party above pub lic. It is sufficient reason why anyone, regardless of dlls politi cal prejudice should vote for more patriotic men in office. A mow Robison« 30-3p Wemme, Oregon ITS ENGINE ADDS MESCLE TO EVERY DROP OF GAS! To many owners, the mighty 180 H.P. V-8 engine that powers the Chrysler New Yorker is the most remarkable feature of this remarkable car. It is cer tainly the most discussed automobile engine in many, many years. This is the engine with hemispherical combustion chambers . . . the engine that gets more power out of every drop of gas. And non-premium gas at that! Actually, it puts you in control of more power than you’ll probably ever need use. You’ll sense this . . . together with its unequaled response . . . the very first yards you drive. It runs smoother, more quietly, and with less wear than any other engine ever built into an American automobile. . . . and it makes driving (both cruising and the short runs) more fun than you have ever known it to be! .* But that’s not all. Along with this engine there are scores of other reasons, too, for driving a New Yorker before resolving on -any new car, Like Full-time Power Steering that makes steering fiee timet easier . . . and your control fiee timet greater . . . than in ordinary cars. Like Power Brakes that cut needed pedal pressure by as much as two-thirds. ’ Like Onflow shock absorbers that make even bad roads feel “newly paved’’ . . . restful chair-high seats « . . big, wide- opening doors . . . big windows that let you tee more. It’s true . . . until you drive a Chrysler New Yorker you won’t know what you’re missing. Why not stop In today? CHRYSLER THE FINEST CAR AMERICA HAS YET PRODUCED .4 PRATT MOTOR CO.
