NEW PP&L PROJECT TO BOOST
NORTHWEST KILOWATT SUPPLY
Work on PPAL’« $26,450,000 Yale Hydroelectric Project on the
. Lewis River 40 miles north of Portland it being pushed forward
24 honra a day. The power to be produced is so important to the
area and the nation that the development lias been given high
priority by the Defense Production Admin lstratioDo
Yale’s 100,000 kilowatts will be a timely addition to North
west power supply. The project is to he completed w i t h i n IB
months— in time to produce power for the 1952-53 winter peak
load season.
•-
More significantly, the Yale plant’s greatest output will come
during the winter m onths, when demands are heaviest on the
Company’s system and throughout the N o r t h w e s t P o w e r I <><>!.
of which PP&L is an integral pai¿'
Drainage area_of the Lewis River, on the western slope of the
Cascades, has high winter precipitation and normally heavy
stream flow during the peak power load season. Thus p l a n t s lik<
Yale and it» downstream teammate, the 100,l)Q0-kilowatt M e r w m
Project, ideally supplement the large Federal projects on the
Columbia River, which has its lowest flow in m i d w i n t e r .
