French Oregon C/iesf Drive Rufus Wheat Being Sown and Coming Up Rapidly In Warm Weather D uring October the drive for funds w ith which to care for the needy will be going on in Sher m an county, it having already started In m ost of the state. Sherm an county’s quota to the state-wide fund is $633. This is used to care for homeless children, derelict girls and or phans in the several approved homes in the state. Of this sum the county is providing $500 through taxation. T here is no local quota as no local charities are aided and con- sidering the scattered population could hardly be. Those who feel able to contri- hute to the welfare of those In distress may do so by sending funds to the Journal office, or give them to A. A. Dunlap a t Grass Valley, Carrel S. B ennett at the bank or George A. P otter at Klondike. ___________ _ Legion Auxiliary Install Anew Research Program A ■ The soil conservation service is going to start experimental plots in Umatilla county thia fall according to an annoucement made this week in Pendleton. Merrill Oveson, superintendent of the Moro Experimental station, will be in Charge of the Pendleton station and also director of the soil conservation plots. George Mitchell, present superintendent of the Pendleton field station, will come to Moro to manage the local station, The extent of the experim ent* to be conducted is not entirely decided. It is hoped that the SCS can lease for at least a ten year period, tracts of 80 acres in different p arts of Umatilla county on which to conduct ex- perlm ents in stubble utilization, in trashy fallow m anagem ent and in other soil onservation methods. The area w here the greatest loss Is being felt la In the heavy lands northeast of Pendleton. At present there is no plan tor extending the program to the w heat counties west of Umatilla. The plan is the outgrow th of a wheat league proposal which caus ed a delegation of Umatilla coun ty w hat men to go to Washington last spring. They ’ asked for $100,000 and finally received $22,000. The state will be asked for an appropriation to aid the experim ent. Oveson will work under the Bureau of Plant Industry on the station, and for the Soil Conser vation Service and the state ex perim ental office in the soil con servation work. Tim e for m aking the change has not been determ ined.
