Kern Case was huge-bellied and high and round-shouldered from a!l his weight. He was younger than he looked but he had the moon- shaped ungiving face of a man to whom silence was im portant. He turned the rem ark over in his head; it m eant something but he d id n 't get it He backed to the stove and warm ed him self, gently rubbing the seat of his pants Kern Case d id n 't show any change on his face, though his eyes were laughing at Morgan. "Y o u ’ re a long way from the ranch. Ridin* back to n ig h t? " "N e ve r gave it a thought " Case started to speak and changed his m ind. Somebody came q uickly into Freeport, a horse beating out a rh yth m on the dust of the stree t’s fa r end. Case folded his hands on the table, serenely incom m uni cative, listening to the horse haul up. Morgan said, "H e ll or a lot of tra ffic fo r a dead b u rg ," and moved id ly tow ard the door. - “ Tw enty years ago," said Kern Case, "y o u ’d ,of got shot for a re m a rk like th a t.” Paused by the door, Morgan watched the newcom er swing off his horse in fro n t of the hotel. He looked around at Case. "T im e s change. So do v is ito rs ." He stepped into the store, tu rn in g to the stove. He wheeled when he reached it, keeping his eyes on the door. The new com er’ s steps faded from the street and the silence thickened across the town. M organ’ s face was long and s till; his lips were fiat, th e ir edges pushing together.'A flare o i lig h t showed in his eyes and he stood stra ig h te r than before, lie stood balanced and attentive. The new com er’s steps broke the s till ness again, heavy and loud and com ing ra p id ly forw ard. Case stared at M organ, reading what was to be seen. In a way it was inform a tion , fo r when the storekeeper put his attention to the door and saw Ben Herendeen there he wasn't greatly surprised.
