Un til 1912 she was doctor’s wife and doctor in h e r own rig h t for the central part of Sherman county. The book, published this month h” Birfords & Mort of Portland,, is r novel. It is called an histori cal novel, a classification to which it canz barely qualify. It recounts the troubles of the homesteaders who came to this county w ith the agents of the • Braver Land company which wdl tx recognized as the Eastern Ore gon la n d company, and with the - .cattlem en who tried to retain the land for themselves. • Some of the descriptions are very good and the author reveals a lik ing for thia country th a t has been retained over the nearly_30 years since her departure. H er plot is satisfactory although many of the homesteaders actually had a much harder time than the books’ hero, Frank Durand. Characterization is inclined to be weak. Readers will not find any known characters Of early days in Sher- man county in the book. Mrs. Goffin has evaded th a t aourc< of trouble. Frank Durand becomes homesteader, leader of the move ment ag ain st the land company, lawyer and congressm an and m ar ries the girl he wants while beset by the land company agent and a jealous cattlem an. The scene of the book is very definitely in Sherm ancounty and W rangle, the town in the book, is- certainly Moro. Several scenes are places in 'Hie Dalles. The book is readable and wrill be found interesting, e sp e c ia lly to those who rem ember or have an interest in early day history. .78 . .79 ' 39 .84 .89 .99 .75 .96 434 6.34 What finer whiskey for holiday cheer than 10 * 3 ■ 1939 1938 1937, 1936 , T935.... 1933-4 1932 1931 1930 1929 18 " 1939 11 1938 7 , 1937 1936 5 12 1935 9.62 .63 10.07 1.31 19.85 3.71 27.38 6.48 50.19 14.08 69.87 22.34 57.41 20.45 96.49 37.41 95.00 34.10 39.67 110.51 Total $546.39 30.55 28.55 / ' ? .00 31.07 .17 27.82 41.39 7.74 33.66 57.08 13.50 43.58 53.87 15.11 38.76 48.48 15.50 32.98 13.25 » 37.20 23.95 68.93 26.73 42.20 67.86 24.36 43.50 78.94 28.34 60.60 $515.37 .78 .79 1.98 1.68 1.80 1.56 24 ,1939 1.57 28 1938 2.90 1937 21 o 2.53 1936 2.67 1 8 ' 1935 1933-4 5 2.97 16 v 2.24 19 . 1932 7.16 10 , 1931 1930 , 7.25 3 10.57 .10 "1929 .05 .12 .45 J52 .70 .83 .91 • 2.43 2.20 2.50 $8.87 .11 .23 \6 9 .78 1.04 1.40 *, 124 4.53 4.06 5.92 1.67 1.80 3.68 3.31 3.71 4.37 3.48 11.31 16.49 $61.51 Independent W arehouse St Mill ing Company, Wasco, Biggs F irst Addition, W est 38 feet of lot Page 16 3 W.
