The re su lts cf suol| i'ert+w j^tests w ith ibeef c a ttle, sheep, d airy c a t tle, hogs, and horses have ju s t «been reported in a new statio n circu lar No. 137, en titled “ S urplus W heat F eeding E x p erim en ts in O tegon.” Copies m ay be had free. These com prehensive feeding ex perim ents and d em o n stratio n s were m ade possible by the allo tm en t of 350 tons of su rp lu s w h eat 'by the F ederal ^Surplus Com m odities c o r poration. The w heat was divided am ong the central and 3 (branch ex p erim en t statio n s fo r use in a series*of ex p erim en ts which includ ed not only fa tte n in g te sts, b u t ever w in terin g and m aintenance feeding as well. In cattle feeding tests in e a s t ern Oregon about 1000 pounds of w heat w ith 1500 to 1800 pounds of a lfa lfa hay were required to f a t ten a steer. W heat was equal to, or b e tte r th an , barley or other feed g ra in s n the fa tte n in g r®< tions. In testit a t the c e n tr a l 's t a tion, ground w*heat was successfu l ly used w ith chopped oats and vetch h ay for fa tte n in g baby beeves. W heat was found to be a t le a st equal, if not b etter th an barley as a supplem ental feed for fa tte n in g 'beef calves on ladino clover p astu re. W in terin g experim ents were c a r ried out a t th e Squaw B utte ex perim en t statio n and in the c o a it ran g e, which revealed the value of w h eat as a supplem ental feed w ith low g rad e hays. W heat gave slig h tly b e tte r resu lts th an eith er barley or oats in lam b fa tte n in g ex p erim en ts a t the eastern O re gon branch statio n , and wajs fed successfully to hreeeding ewes a t thè ce n tral station. The ewes show cd no d igestive distu rb an ces and produced a good crop of lam bs. W heat proved to be an en tirely ra risfa c to ry su b stitu te fo r the usual g rain in a ration for d airy h d fe rs o r milk cows. It was also equal to corn in fa tte n in g hogs, rn d successfully replaced oat« when fed to grow ing colts and d ra f t horses.
