Traffic Accidents Take Lives Rapidly In Oregon In 1940 Traffic accidents in the s ta te oi Oregon claim ed lives a t the ra te of 14 per 106,000,000 miles of travel during th e first q u a rte r of 1940, it was announced today by E arl Sneli secretary of sta te . T he d eath ra te for the first q u a rte r of this year was the sam e as fo r tihe correspond ing period of la st y ear. The traffic d eath ra te is com puted on a b asis of th e to ta l mim- be- of persons killed d u rin g the period in relatio n to the num ber of miles traveled as shown by gasoline ccnsum ption in the state. The death ra te fo r the m onth of M arch this year was 13, one p o in t h igher than the ra te for the same m onth last year. .Travel in the s ta te totaled 219,810,929 miles dur- ing the m onth of M arch, an in crease of 4.7 percent over the m ile age for M arch, 1939. Gasoline consum ed during th< m onth totaled 19,214,241 gallons, ar, increase of nearly ten percent F or the first th ree m onths of the year, consum ption totaled 51,071,- 677 gallons, com pared to 46,470,0*21 gallons for the sam e period a year ago.
