car, followed closely by a deer-

this unconventional age, he re

Stopping his car, h found the
doe standing beside a nearby tree
and evidently all “fussed up” a-
bout something which she failed
to isclose. No fawn was in sight.

bobcat jumped out of the small
pine which the doe was facing and
dashed off with the deer in hot
persujf. The angry doe pressed
the cat so hard that he treed again
in less than a hundred yards and
the forester had to leave before ;
the final round of this strange
woodland combat was decided.
Doubtless the doe had a fawn
near by and had determine to
clear the neighborhood of its un<
welcome visitors. “I have known
deer to chase dogs away from their
fawns.’” said Huff, “and if a dog
is wise he will not start an argu
ment with a mother eer, but I nevei
knew a deer to put a wildcat up a
tree and, what is more, insist that
he stay there.’
