Forty days, forty-five days and perhaps on up to sixty days the bout continues and still the. prob lems of state have all the honors without the legislature making ■ good competition ‘ Questions regarding the election of national committeeman and woman, the changing of the names of cemetery associations and speeding-up work of circuit courts (as if the legislators could give any advice on that subject) have been considered. Perhaps it it is unfair to comment unfavorably about the lack of public dis cussion of the really important measures. Surely these matters have been before committee after committee in many forms but there is no one with*a complete program that the many bills can be made to fit and therefore delay and waiting is still the fare of the solons It will have to end sometime for the businesses of legistators will need them and $120 cannot be made to stretch many days past the regular forty Are the people to have a sales tax, a property tax or will the lawmakers finally decide to cut and slash budgets until neither is needed? What will be done about highway funds? W hat about a lot of things that have been left until the last unremunerative days when legislation is hurriedly passed, often to be regretted later? We doubt if the individual legislators are to blame x The system is at fault in that it gives rise to the presumption that ninety mtn hitherto unacquainted can meet, organize and ayree in forty days upon the momentous problems of the times. When it is consider ed that each legislator must read, study and form a definite conclu sion on twenty bills per day, a^ an average, to finish the session on time' The task immediately looks staggering.
