C loverdafe Courier GERMANY'S LESSON TO THE UNITED Published Every Friday by The mobility of the German army is one of the secrets of Germany’s great success. The kaiser’s country has used the same men time and again on the east and west fronts. In less than three days Germany can shift an army from one side of the country to another. She uses the army in an engagement on the west, makes gains and holds her place with a small number of soldiers, com paratively speaking, and then rushes the main body across the country to another field of operations and uses them there. The constant shifting of wroops has been to the great advantage of Germany in making her quick drives. A German captain, who served for sixteen months with the German forces, on his return to New York is quoted by a New York paper as saying that to his knowledge 40,000 troops were sturted from the western lines to a position on the eastern front and made ready for action against the Russians in sixty hours. Germany’s remarkable railroad facili ties are in a large measure responsible for this unusual mobility of its armed forces. But that is not the whole story. Much training had been given in mo bility before the great war started. An essential part of the scheme of German efficiency is to be prepared in details. It is interesting to observe that when our army maneuvers were called for five years ago to take place on the Mexicau border, much time was consumed in getting the forces to their destination. The maneuver division was to consist of three infantry brigades, a field artillery brigade, a.i independent cavalry brigade and the necessary auxiliary troops, an aggregate strength of 15,056 men and 613 officers. Orders were issued on March 6. By March 31 the number at the concentration point was 11,254; on April 30 it was 12,598; on May 31 it was 12,09; and the maximum strength was not reached until three months after the order to assemble had been given. Ma ìy times are we asked why Clo- verdile does not incorporate into a city? This is the wish of a great many citi zens and the only reason and the real one is that we haven’ t ns yet i c ¡uired sufficient population. It requires one hundred and fifty souls inside the cor porate limits to form a municipality.
