Runners came from all 50 states and 43 countries Satur- day, Aug. 26, to compete in the race that spans from Timber- line Lodge to Seaside’s Prom- enade, covering 199 miles and raising $700,000 for Provi- dence hospitals, Chief Operat- ing Officer Dan Floyd said. After the race, thousands celebrated on the beach with beer, pop-up food stands and musical performances from Radical Revolution and the Brian O’Dell Band until the sun set over the horizon. While Hood to Coast is known for featuring world- class athletes capable of Olym- pic-style race times, a chunk of the money raised for cancer re- search comes from groups like “You walkin’ to me?” — one of the 400 race walking teams who participate in the Portland To Coast Walk Relay portion of the event. “There aren’t a lot of race walkers out there, so it’s a pret- ty tight-knit community,” team captain Marek Ziegien said. The Portland-based team, donning bright yellow shirts with an illustration of the movie “Taxi Driver,” are all co-workers who have been competing in this event for the past five years. The team likes to keep it light, rotating team names with other walking puns like “Walks on Walks Off” and “Sasqu-walks.” But the walking itself is anything but casual. “We’re a part of a race The interior of Lannie Hurst’s Cannon Beach home, fea- tured on the Cottage & Garden Tour. There’s a real technique to it,” team member David Howitz said. The team competes in other events where there are strict guidelines for race walking form. And thinking of race walking as a slow sport is a misconception, they said. Cur- rently, the record for fastest walking time for a mile is 5 minutes and 31 seconds. The technique comes down to how the arm swings, how the hip drops and making sure to roll the foot forward. But that challenge of balancing physical and the mental com- ponents is what makes race walking more fun than run- ning to some, team member Michelle Chuaprasert said. “If you think you’re just going to walk faster, it’s not going to work. It’s not intui- tive,” she said. But for some race walking teams, like the “Christopher Walkins” from Sherwood, competing in Portland to Coast is a way to connect as friends JEFF TER HAR/FOR EO MEDIA GROUP Crossing the finish line at Hood to Coast. out of the routine of their ev- eryday lives. “Why do we race walk? Because we don’t run,” team member Jenni Kelley laughed. “Because someone on your friend’s team cancels, and you do it for the first time and then you get hooked.” Active Members of What is RMLS? For this team, race walking isn’t about form and just do- ing something physical, team member Michelle Coxcy said. “It’s about doing something for ourselves,” Coxcy said. “It’s not easy, but it’s some- thing we can do together that’s fun.” When Kelly Giampa bought her house in Can- non Beach 15 years ago, she didn’t expect the previous homeowner to come with it. Giampa wasn’t keen on Cannon Beach at first be- cause of its “tourist feel,” but after seeing “charming pho- tos” of the inside, she decided to give it a chance. And when she and her husband came for the show- ing, there was an unexpected bonus: meeting the seller of the home, Lannie Hurst, a Portland theater icon and ac- tivist. On the outside, the house looked terrible, Giampa re- called. “We almost didn’t want to go in,” she said. “But when we walked in, Lannie greeted us in the kitchen, which was unusual because usually the seller isn’t there.” They immediately con- nected and soon bonded over their shared love of Broad- way, music and shared roots in Portland. In the transition, Hurst quickly became family to the Giampas. “We told her Making Sweet Memories for over 54 Sweet Years! On top of en- joying live concerts and lun- cheons, people tour homes with creative architecture, scenic landscaping and his- torical significance. Built in the 1950s, Giam- pa’s home is no exception to these features, especially after the many years she has spent gradually renovating the out- side of the beachfront home. But to Giampa, what makes her home special is the friendship that formed there before Hurst’s death in 2010. “To me, this house is a person. That’s how it’s al- ways been. Every time I’ve walked in here the past 15 years, it feels like I’m getting a hug,” she said. “It feels like Lannie.” Though some furniture has been swapped out over the years, a photo of Hurst, sitting atop a hutch in the kitchen, still stands watch over the home.
