6A • April 21, 2017 | Cannon Beach Gazette | cannonbeachgazette.com A RUN FOR ALL OF US Red Cross seeks recruits for disaster training By Brenna Visser Cannon Beach Gazette For those in Cannon Beach who want to help in the event of a disaster, the American Red Cross is looking to recruit. Police Chief Jason Schermerhorn and Amer- ican Red Cross Disaster Program Manager Jenny Carver present a Red Cross recruiting event 5:30 p.m. April 27, at the Chamber of Commerce in the hopes of educating individuals of the services and opportunities available to volunteers. The event was inspired after a series of storms in October threatened the area. Carver, who was in Cannon Beach to promote the event, remembers trying to reach out to Red Cross volun- teers in Cannon Beach, but said she realized there were none at that time. “It spurred a conversa- tion,” Carver said. Those who attend will learn about sheltering, di- saster preparedness and disaster action team pro- grams, Carver said. Anyone can come into it with any level of commit- ment, Schermerhorn said. “We have lots of small incidents in this area, and it’s great to pull from any resources you can,” he said. “The more people you have trained, the great pool you have to draw from.” Red Cross volunteers of- ten work closely with other disaster preparedness like the Medical Reserve Corps and CERT, and having vol- unteers familiar with multi- ple skills can serve as asset during a disaster, Schermer- horn said. “Some CERT members may not be needed in a mo- ment, but could help in a sheltering capacity, for ex- ample,” he said. No matter the situation, joining means joining a group of people who have a heart for helping the com- munity, Carver said. “A prepared community makes a resilient communi- ty,” Carver said. “The more families who are trained, the better of the community will be.” Carver also said to ex- pect a training in sheltering the first weekend of June. As in-memo- riam grand marshal at the July 8 event, Halbrook, a former Seaside resi- dent who lost her long battle with cancer in 2016, will be remembered by family with a team in her Marilyn Halbrook memory. “Her fami- ly is coming from all over to celebrate and honor Marilyn at this year’s relay,” said Laura Parvi, the event chairwoman. The opening ceremony pays homage to Halbrook’s fight. On July 8-9, at Astoria High School, Relay For Life of Clatsop County 2017 takes place as part of the interna- tionally recognized Relay For Life, the signature fundrais- er for the American Cancer Society. Relays For Life are staffed and coordinated by volunteers in more than 5,200 communities in 27 countries. These events bring commu- nities together to remember lost loved ones, honor cancer survivors, and raise money for the American Cancer Society. This year’s theme is “Who is your superhero?” “Your superhero could be your mom you lost to cancer, your Dad who is fighting the battle, or maybe your super- hero is Batman,” Parvi said. “It doesn’t matter who your superhero is, we want to cel- ebrate them all at this years relay.” Clatsop County’s Relay For Life was started in 1994 by Parvi’s father-in-law, Kay Bredleau. “Kay was part of a prostate cancer support group when he was approached by the Amer- ican Cancer Society about starting the Relay in Clatsop County,” Parvi said. “Kay was passionate about helping others, and as a prostate can- cer survivor, he did not want his children or grandchildren to go through what he and his wife, Evelyn did.” Parvi got involved with Re- lay in 1994. Halbrook, a can- cer survivor, joined in 2000. “We got to know each oth- er,” Parvi said. “She was so vi- brant and outgoing and funny SUBMITTED PHOTO Kay and Evelyn Bredleau with Laura Parvi, at left. Kay Bredleau was the first co-chairman of the event in 1994, along with Kendra Gohl. and she always gave her whole heart to the relay.” Two years ago Halbrook was at the relay wearing a crown and a purple boa, Parvi recalled. “Last year was the first year she couldn’t partici- pate. She always worked with survivors; even when she was going through chemo, she was always at the meetings and so engaged.” Halbrook died Dec. 1, with the request at her death the people give to the Relay. Her great-niece, Ashtyn Routh, is in charge of a team called Marilyn’s Red Hot Chili Pep- pers, raising money in her memory. “We chose that name for our team because Marilyn always made chili for our family on the eve of all our holidays and big events,” Routh said. “Mar- ilyn was our family matriarch. She always took on the big jobs. She didn’t like small plate things. She liked big plates.” Parvi is a cancer survivor herself. “Surgery fixed mine,” she said. “I’m a nurse at Co- lumbia Memorial Hospital. I see the effects cancer and che- mo and radiation have not just on the person but their entire family.” To sign up for a team, call 503-440-3497 or 503-298- 8943. feit checks; counterfeit checks were also passed in Manzanita, Astoria, and Seaside, possibly by the same individual or individual.
