January 1, 2016 | Cannon Beach Gazette | cannonbeachgazette.com • 7A Christmas Basket program is ‘a community effort’ Baskets from Page 1A The boxes contained an array of items, depend- ing on the household size. Among the items were whole turkeys, vegetables, apples, canned goods, dried ramen noodles, croutons for stuf¿ng and more. The packages contained a spe- cial treat from Bruce’s Can- dy Kitchen, as well. Chil- dren also received presents wrapped earlier in the week ca n n on bea ch GAZ E T T E by members of the Ameri- can Legion Auxiliary. About 60 households — or approximately 250 peo- ple — received boxes this year. The number Àuctuates by about 10 to 15 each sea- son. Some of the area’s hos- pitality workers leave tem- porarily during the winter, or Boehm suspects the need would be greater, “well over 300 people,” he said. Some of the items — particularly the toys — are The legion has done the program ‘for many, many years now.’ Legion Post Commander Dan O’Reilly donated and everything else is purchased with money from the legion post’s charitable account, which relies on donations and grants. It costs be- tween $4,200 and $4,400 to ¿ll the baskets, said Boehm, who does the shopping. He spends about 40 hours putting together the program, but he’s been doing it so long it is like “second nature,” he said. Pulling off the program re- lies on “the grace and help from the volunteers,” he said. “It’s a community ef- fort,” O’Reilly said. Area residents Jim and Heidi Lent have volun- teered for about ¿ve or six years. Heidi Lent, a mem- ber of the auxiliary, said they started in part to get their children involved in helping with a community service project. “I think that’s a good thing to teach,” she said. Although it’s a simple concept, the volunteers agreed there is something meaningful about helping out others in the commu- nity. “You know they need it,” Heidi Lent said of the recipients. “You can see it on their faces — they just need it.” M A R K ETPL A C E T o pla ce a cla ssified a d ca ll 503-436-2812, log on to w w w .ca n n on bea ch ga zette.com or stop in a t 1555 N .
