Oregon "Kaiser" Jackson Is Inconsistent "Somewhat amusing is the position of outraged virtue assumed by Kaiser C.S. Jackson; high priest of the single tax In Oregon, who accuses the country newspapers of abusing him because of the measures he has initiated to do away with the publication of the delin quent tax list and to decrease1 the rate for legal publications," say the tttage Grove SentineL This paper goes on to state that its editor, who it secretary of the Willamette Valley Editorial As sociation, wrote Mr. Jackson on Feb ruary 20 asking him. to appear before the organization for the express pur- Dose of discussing the merits of his proposed measures. Kaiser Jackson haughtily Ignored this letter and has never given a reason for not wishing to meet the country newspaper men face to face. The most plausible ex planation is that Kaiser Jackson is too cowardlv to adopt the suggestion, knowing that he would be badly worsted because of having almost no argument for his side of the case but his charge cf abuse at this time comes with mighty bad grace. Editor Bede says that at th? legislative session at which the present bill was passed Jack son waa represented by his man Friday, Attorney Hagood, and he admitted that the bill was a good one and a wise piece nprmanv will hn in npfli-ft fir pieces before many moons. The two most popular words in America right now are "uncon ditional surrender." It is said that at the beginning of the war American women were carrying 30.000 tons of steel in their corsets. Could this be called a corset waste? What is Sam Jackson's -reason for trying to discredit a law he once said, through hi represent ative, was a fine piece of letfi sta tion? Reckon he's got another single tax joker up his sleeve. The word of Germany is cer tainly not so good as its bond. And the holders of German bonds are said to be suffering much anxiety about the value of their investment and with reason. You can infer how much the word is worth. UNITED WAR FUND SURE THE NEEDED Even End of Hostilities Would Not Change This. Though the war should cease Im mediately it is sajd that every cent ol the $170,600,000 sought In the United War Wdrk campaign In the United States, for the seven approved orgaa lzatlons ministering to the American fighters, will be needed just the same. This Is the word of leaders of the fund-raising campaign and their ex planation Is easily comprehended. Id the first place, It has been officially estimated that 18 months to two years must elapse before all the American boys can be returned from foreign soli. There are the men of many other countries to be transported home when the war ends, so the number of boats for use of the Yankees will be limited. Then there Is also the fact that thou sands must remain so long as the great properties and stores of the United States have not ben disposed of or returned. ' . , , Immediate cessation of war activi ties In Fj,rope would plainly create grave problems connected with the care of the men. Remove the great motive which actuates every man at the front today and throw him Into dull Inactivity, with nothing much to do but await his chance to return to home and loved ones, and the work of keeping him cheerful Increases In mag nitude. The soldier welfare organiza tions foresee all phases of this grave contingency. They foresee how great would be the need for reading matter, entertainments, amusements, recrea tion and th cheery personal touch. Best Big Slttera. The Y. W. C. A. Is known as "The Best Big Sister In the World." Of the $170,500,000 to be raised In the United War Work Campaign $1S,000,000 will go to the work of this organization. Hospitality to the fighting man and to his vlxltlng friends, Is the motto of the War Community Service, a mighty necessary thing.
