FETE SUML A very enjoyable evening was by those who attended the - lawn fete given by Mr. and Mrs. Ed ward Dunn at their home Sun day. July 16th. The lawn was decorated with Japanese lanterns and presented a very pretty ap pearance. About sixty persons were present and took part in games of various kinds. Dainty refreshments were served and an excellent program, consisting of vocal and instrumental music was rendered. The crowd went home about 11:30 and all declared they had enjoyed themselves im mensely and extended their thanks to Mrs. Dunn whom they decided was a most royal entertainer. REASON FOR CROP SHORTAGE In the last Sunday Journal, an article by Hyman H. Cohen plac es Gilliam County's wheat crop at 1,000,000 bushels, but this es timate is probably a little high. Mr. Cohen says "Possibly one of the greatest helps toward malting this present crop of wheat the greatest ever grown in the Pacific northwest is the unusual care taken by the grow ers in the better districts. Had this same care been taken in the lighter land sections of Oregon, the result would have been a surprise in yield. In this connection it should be stated that tne growers of Gill iam and Morrow counties are much to blame for the smallness of their crops. Very shallow cultivation has been continued in those districts although some of the farmers within the bor ders are changing their tactics and are plowing deep to conserve every drop of moisture that the ground receives. The single planting of wheat and expecting to harvest three crops U another drawback to the light land sections of Oregon and helps to pull down the average yield. This has been demon strated in Gilliam county where one field of volunteer wheat pro duced six bushels per acre while one alongside right over the fence -produced an average of 15 bushels. The difference was but the matter of cultivation and seeding." Watch Fob Lost. Fob made of two ribbons and a gold clasp with ivory horse head attached. Finder will re turn to this office and recieve suitable reward. D. Tierney left on Saturday last for Spokane to visit over Sunday with his family, who have been there for a month.
