THE CONDON GLOBE HARTSHORN & HARLAN rabUaacr. V FRIDAY, MAY 13. 1910. DESCRIPTION PRICB. U N MI TEA. Koaerad at tuMlct a eecona-eleea main. lMbltshed Every rridaj. f Since going to the Hay 'Cree pumping plant less than a month ago, W. L. McCaleb has demon strated the fact that when' the City of Condon secured his ser vices it secured an engineer who thoroughly understands his busi ness.' After being sent to-the Hay Creek plant he caused to be ordered $29 worth of tools, and after securing these he at 'once put the plant in first-class 'run ning order and at the present time has the reservoirs, which had been entirely empty for four months, again filled with water, thns giving the residents of ; the city the necessary protections It is"lhis kind of help for the f city that makes 'every resident ' feel that they are securing a dollars worth of service for a dollar . in money. - The Young Men's Christian Association is taking a leading place in the educational progress of the state, and becauseof its expert instructors, well equipped laboratories, favorable location, and the high standard of its work it is destined to exert no small influence on - the history! of vv L. f achievement in uregon. There are 18 million acres of unoccupied land in Central' and Southern Oregon, according i to estimates made in PortlamMThe race into the central part of (the State by the Great Northern' and Union Pacific Railways is going to. throw open a land full of op portunities for several hundred thousand settlers. Part of;' this land may be successfully farmed by ordinary methods part of- it by dry farming methods, and part of it by irrigation. It is a vast new empire that will be opened, and every part of Tthe Northwest will be benefited.": Did you ever notice that one important difference between the man who succeeds in business and the man whe fails lies in the 'factthatoneman improves every opportunity of letting- people know that he has to fselL, While the other lets people find out for themselves if they can? ' Popular government has an earnest and convincing' cham pion in Hon. Jonathan Bourne, jr., senior Senator from, the most popular governed and pro gressive State, politically, ia the Union Oregon. ' . His address, delivered 'yester day, presents the issue in a4 man ner that will command wide at tention. A political evolution, not a revolution, is impending, and Oregon, first to evolve' a system of honest politics and honest popular elections, leads in a movement that is destined, no doubt, to reach every com monwealth of the republic. ; She occupies a proud, exalted posi tion to-day in the sisterhood of States -' Senator Bourne, in speaking for his State, speaks for a just and; righteous system that, has passed the experimental stage and is bound to commend' itself t people throughout the, land who demand, popular govern as air inherent, inalienable -flthir-Washington (D.CHer- je-Tiefanners and fruit growers are rejoicing and they certainly have cause" to be jubilant for the rain of the past two weeks assures" beyond the question and vegetable crops this year The prospects for record break ing crops along all " lines were never so bright as at the present Wheat acreage, lthe country over shows, a slight increase over that of last 'year especially the number " sown y to spring wheat' There are also less weeds to be seen this year than last Fine crops were assured before but f the recent grains promise to bring to Gilliam County the banner year of her history. v ' ... ; Gwendolen Items.
