The Wheat City, with its educational and relig ious advantages, to say nothing of its money making resource is destined to become the .. largest city of the Central Oregon coun try. Why not make a slogan of "2500 inhabitants for Condon by January 1st, 1910." : The new organization, the Gilliam County Improvement Association, with headquarters in this city, could work to no better ad vantage after it has secured the experimental farm, than to make its main object "The Wheat City 2500, January 1st, 1910." The organization propo ses to advertise the resources, and there is plenty of them, but your help is needed. i'Boost'.'as you have never "boosted" be fore! The county court fulfilled its duties last week by voting the 8-mill tax establishing the coira ty high school fund. This move decided that we are to have a high school building erected dur ing the summer. Details as to its construction and cost have not yet been fully considered, but it is known that we are to have a magnificent and commo dious building, with opportunity to extend as the needs of the county shall demand. The cost will be approximately $15,000.00. At all events there seems to be the determination to have a high school building befitting the dig nity of the city and county. Two cent postage has gone in to effect between Germany and the United States and hundreds of thousands of people in both countries will be benefited by the greater cheapness and facili ty in communication and the net result will doubtless add largely to that more perfect understand ing which makes for friendship and mutual helpfulness between individuals, and peace and comi ty between nations. When President Roosevelt started our fleet around the world he had no expectation that the big battleships would carry on an assault with bread instead of cannon balls and make the Italians more thankful than ever for the country that Columbus discovered. The calamity in Southern Italy has given our fleet an opportunity to fight against pestilence, famine and direct suffering. The i open handed re sponse of Congress to the Presi dent's message asking an appro priation for the relief of the inhabitants of the earthquake area in Italy will doubtless be gratifying to Americans, the giv ers, as it will be a godsend to those who receive. The mone tary unit of measure in Italy is a lire or nineteen and a fraction cents and the eight hundred thousand dollars appropriated by Congress will mean more than four million of lira to that strick en country and will go far in the relief of distress. Our country is as it should be foremost in this urgent charity. As the wealth iest and most favored land hav ing the greatest abundance of the means of life it is appropri ate that we should contribute munificently to any country or people in distress and it should be even a pleasure to help a country to whom we are so much indebted for art, literature, set ence and civilization. qnnnvnnnsuujuvruvufuvuuvn nnp rrcucncinnn ivtcdcct s S IILIfitl Ul LUUAL 111 I LULU I duunuuuuwmnnAnAru innnnuuo To trade Two, three-bottom, fourteen inch plows in good con dition, for twelve inch, three bottom plows.
