The Department of Agricul ture and the Interior Department have agreed to establish and - - ! t .ntlia equip an experiment imm Umatilla irrieation proiect. to assist farmers in properly devel- their land. The Washing ton disnatch brineing the news of this proposed aid to the irri eaters also says that Professor Kerr has secured from the Agri pnlfiiral Dpnartment a Dromise to co-onerate with the state in establishing an experiment sta tion for dry-land fanning in Mor row, Gilliam or Sherman county, While the methods of dry farm ing and irrigated farming are vastly different, both have the same end in view. The purpose of each is to bring into a pro ductive state vast tracts of rich land which at the present time are non-productive. In many localities it is absolutely neces sary that water be secured in order to produce a crop, and, even in other semi-arid localities, water would greatly enhance the value of the land. But throughout the Pacific Northwest there are vast tracts of semi-arid land that, with proper cultivation and a thorough knowledge of the work on the part of the fanner, can be made to turn out very good crop3 with out the aid of irrigation. The Oregon Agricultural College has on its staff a number of dry farming experts who have had practical experience covenng many years in farming districts, where the amount of natural moisture was much less than it is in the dry regions of the Paci fic Northwest and where water for irrigating purposes was un available. With an experimental farm where practical demons trations of dry-farming methods can be made, these experts can do an inestimable amount of good. Irrigation, of course, where the supply of water is ample, .'.can be made the most certain method of farming known, but the drv famine lands east of the Cascade Mountains have wonderful future, and in years to come, when the science of conservation of natural moisture in the soil is thoroughly under stood, surprising results will fol low. The Umatilla irrigation experiment farm will prove of ereat value to the state and to the projects in adjoining states, but its advantages cannot exce those which will follow i thorough understanding of dry farming in the Pacific North west Oregonian. How many property owners have repaired their sidewalks since the order for such has been issued by the city council? What have you done about yours? This is a personal question but it must be attended to or the city mar shal will do it it for you and you will have to foot the bill. The condition of the sidewalks of Condon is a sad thing to think about, a constant knock to the city when a stranger must walk on them, and worse yet the walks are a constant danger to yourself and other residents of the city. Those missing boards, and the broken ones waiting for a chance to trip some one as well as the number of nails which should be hammered down, are all a regu lar nightmare to pedestrians and at any time might prove to be the cause of a serious damage suit against the city. It is to be hoped that the city marshal wul not stop his work of forcing side walk repairs until every delap- idated walk in town is put in first-class condition. Do it for appearences sake, if not for your own safety! RAW IXNGS When the lungs are tore anil In flsrued, the ftturine of pneumonia nd consumption find lodgement and multiply.
